The Virgoan Mind of Howard Hughes

Today we are going deep into the astrological makings of a very complex man.  Ladies and gentleman, I give you Howard Hughes!

howard-hughes-9346282-1-402

This man claims to have been born on Christmas Eve but his baptist records put him on the more mundane date of September 24.  With balanced features like his (not to mention all the women and the charm) it is no surprise that he is in truth, a Libra.

HowardHughes

Note: this is an equal house chart (where each house is an equal 30 degrees).  For anyone that is strictly Placidus or whatever else I say don’t worry!  The big themes of a chart always find a way of making themselves known no matter what system you use..  I am not insistent on this house-system I just find it the easiest to understand.

The first thing that really draws my eye into his chart is that Mercury at the very bottom of the chart.  It is in Virgo (the ever over-analyzing, perfecting and exacting scrutinizer) and it is under some serious pressure.

giphy-facebook_s

DiCaprio gave a very compelling performance as Hughes in Scorceses’ “The Aviator”.  Here he gives us an excellent glimpse of Hughes’ Mercury in Virgo (extreme focus on precision).

37-washing-hands

But uh oh.  Here it is again :/

Howard Hughes seems to have acquired the brunt of his OCD from his mother, who used to scrub him clean all through his childhood and teach him to be afraid of germs.

His Mercury is found at the bottom of the chart right on the 4th house cusp.  This is the place in the chart that is associated with the Mother and early childhood (because it is the house that is connected to the sign of Cancer).

Mercury is the planet associated with our thinking.  It is always listening and responding to our environment (like DNA!)

images

The caduceus (symbol associated with Mercury) look like the double-helix of DNA.  Information in and information out.

Hughes Mercury (thinking) is under pressure from both Mars and Pluto via the square aspect (an aspect of 90 degrees).  So let’s meet the personal “bullies” of Hughes’ mind!

7f8ba6_4639fd8dd2364730bbe7d4a3bb9c7b37~mv2

Hughes’ Mars is in the expanding and daring fiery sign of Sagittarius.  His masculinity and motivations (Mars) are tied to travel and spirited adventure (Sag).

imx0bub36miwssmfuyws

Like no other sign, Sagittarius says “Go big or go home!”.  This picture of his highly ambitious “Spruce Goose” sums that up pretty well.  It still remains the largest airplane made to date.

The_Outlaw-300937734-large

Here he goes big again with a specialized bra for MAXIMUM exposure of Russell’s large bozooms!

c17dde683780ed75390a52e2b92474b3

Hell’s Angels cost more money than any other movie made during that time. Going big baby! Mars in Sag!

Mars is energy!  It is motivation and stress.  The stuff that propels life along.  Hughe’s Mars is located in the 7th house of relationships.  It’s a common know fact that Hughes did “go (very) big” in the dating field.

Hughes was infamously entangled with a bevy of beautiful starlets.  The glitz and glamour would satisfy his Venus in Leo as well as his Moon in Leo.  Venus for a man will point to something he is drawn to in a woman.  The Moon points to an emotional hunger that we yearn to satiate. This is also connected to the mother and early life.

It’s interesting to think of all of that OCD doting that his mother did for him was still a form of constant attention.  Hughes was known to be a hypochondriac in childhood to secure the constant attention of his parents, both of whom died within his later teenage years.  Hughes went to court and bought out the rest of the family for the inheritance and became a billionaire.

b8af557b69878e8773680144b6688e3a

This side of him points to his Saturn in Aquarius near the top of the chart.  Ambitious (Saturn) eccentricity (Aquarius).

Ok, so back to the pressure on his Virgoan mind.

Let’s meet the next “bully”, the ever secretly-up-to-something Pluto.  And as a side note, these “bullies” are not inherently bad, they are just motivators.  The aspect of the square suggests that it’s a bit more challenging for Hughes.

women-who-howard-hughes-has-dated-u2

Hughes has Pluto in Gemini (the sign associated thinking) and it sits in his first house of personality right near the Ascendant (amplifying it’s noticeable presence).  His free-wheeling Mars is off gallivanting with women (in the 7th) and putting off a big public image (7th) but when we are looking at just Hughes (1st house), without the public, without the starlets, something else emerges.  Something we can see here in his eyes.

deep-water

Pluto is the deep water.  For Hughes the deep water is noticeable right off the bat because it is so close to his Ascendant (the way one “dawns” on others).

thinking

His Pluto is in Gemini, the thinking sign.  The depth that comes forth from Hughes is very mental.

Pluto motivates in a very hidden way.  In Gemini this may take the form of always seeking mental stimulus, and variety of thought.  It lies opposite of the Mars in the 7th house of relationships so we can expect to find a lot of variety there too (and there sure was!).

Pluto is like a rabbit hole.  It’s job is to constantly renew us and purify us through emotional purging.  Hughes’ rabbit hole was so very mental, so full of variety and choices.  For a mind that is suited towards precision and order (Mercury in Virgo) this influx of variety might have been a bit overwhelming.

It would have been nice to see Hughes’ Virgo mind take the Virgoan modest approach to these heavy-weight bullies.  To humbly (Virgo) take things in stride and be aware of his own tendency to over-worry (Virgo pitfall).  We can bring so much peace back to our psyches with a bit of awareness.  This is the department where the horoscope truly shines as a tool.  It serves us to give ourselves a break and be on the lookout for unhealthy habits!

The Wisdom of Bugs Bunny. Mercury as Trickster.

The subject of Mercury keeps you guessing the more you look into it.  It is the archetypal Trickster as well as our own minds.  It is our words and thoughts as well as all of the information that we take in from our surroundings.

blackballs_1120775i

Our own minds as well as the Trickster? Try counting the black dots to get a sense of this.

He is Hermes (Greek) and Thoth (Egypt).  Both of these Gods are connected with communication, perception, writing, learning and zipping around as messengers to the other Gods.  Hermes wears a winged helmet, whereas Thoth’s head is that of an ibis, a bird.

Hermes

Hermes is swift with winged feet as well as a winged helmet. He carries a caduceus, a staff with two serpents and yet another pair of wings at the top.

Thoth_Ibis_Headed_God_web

Thoth’s notion of flight is implied as well with his head being that of a bird. And what is he carrying here? An ankh. The ankh in ancient Egypt is the hieroglyph for “life”. It is also known as the “breath of life”.

Why the concept of flight associated with the head?  Does it point towards looking into the speed of thought?  Could it point to the feeling of flight as being free and light, as in soaring in the clouds?  The mind, speed, flight, freedom… what is the sacredness that is being preserved in these archetypal images?

Let’s take a look at some other familiar Tricksters.  We already have this concept of flight associated with the mind in Hermes and Thoth.  What do we see in the others?

clip_image002_008-1

Isn’t he cute? The Jackal was the Trickster that the ancient Dogon’s believed brought disorder to the world. You can find him in many African and Asian and Middle Eastern myths.

Trickster_goddess_(1134461130)

The Native Americans knew the Trickster as the Coyote. In some stories he has the power of all creation, in others he is a buffoon, and in others he is outsmarting everyone around him.

Pulling a rabbit out of a hat.

What trick? The rabbit has long been associated with trickery and illusion.

One common similarity here is that each of these animals have pointy ears.  Looks a bit like a winged helmet doesn’t it? If we search onward it becomes evident that pointy ears are found on many a Trickster.

wildcard_joker_main2

The joker’s hat is always pointy. Joker also sounds a bit like “Jackal” does it not?

Pan2

Here is Pan, another Greek Trickster. He is also deeply associated with the mysteries of nature and sexuality.

old-peter-pan-1024x768-wallpaper-toonswallpapers-com

Peter Pan is a Trickster who never grows old. Mercury is also associated with youth. The feather in his hat and the fact that he can fly keeps our winged-god of perception alive and well in the hearts of children.

c45b1ece9e093a2a7cebd284465afc06

Another green trickster (perhaps preserving our connection with nature?) the leprechaun has pointy ears and looks like a hybrid of Pan and Peter Pan.

Yoda_SWSB

We can’t talk green and pointy ears if we don’t bring in Yoda! A modern day Trickster who rearranges his words, and teaches us to see with our hearts (the force).

Bugs-Bunny-at-the-Symphony-1

I saved my favorite for the last example- Bugs Bunny! He can outwit anything and ADAPT to any circumstance. Life is nothing but a hoot for him.

1393525223474

Here he is in the winged helmet itself! One of my favorite cartoons entitled “What’s Opera Doc?”

What’s amazing about Mercury is how one association continues to lead to another and quickly.  For instance, the fact that Bug’s says “what’s up doc?”  is curious because of the caduceus association with medicine.  Go into any doctor’s office today and you are likely to find this symbol hanging on a wall or on the cover of a pamphlet.  Let’s look at the symbol again.

cameroncaduceus-585x577

Many believe that the serpents represent the natural kundalini energy in our bodies that travel up the spine and are capable of healing. Maybe before medicine became multi-billion dollar businesses (note the hidden dollar symbol here) it may have an attempt to restore a person’s natural balance of their own subtle energies.

ankhimage

The ankh (wielded by Thoth) is really quite a similar symbol. The loop on top looks like it could be the same two serpents touching heads.

I wrote another post a while back entitled “The close relationship between the heart and mind (Sun and Mercury)” in which I talked about the way the lungs and the heart (Mercury and Sun) are so closely connected in the body.  Mercury is never far off from the Sun.  These are themes that I find very significant when further exploring the true role of Mercury in our psyches.  We know that is always close to the heart and we know that it is by nature a trickster.  It often gives us the “switcheroo” just look at what happens with our eyes!  The perception of the eyes are ruled by Mercury.

313362129

Why does it have to flip it upside down?? What’s with this nonsense?

So if the nature of Mercury is to flip things upside down AND it is always associated with the Sun (life, love, the heart) we might hypothesize that we should strive to “think with our hearts and love with our minds” as Alice O. Howell says.  For anyone who doesn’t know, Alice O. Howell is my favorite astrologer and I encourage everyone to buy her books!  Think with our hearts.. very Yoda!

How do we do that?  I don’t know!  But I do know that something feels good about this notion, at least to me.  So often our minds are slaves to things we DON’T love.  We put our attention to things that feel bad and get stressed and upset.  So often our hearts are screaming at us and we don’t listen.  We just keep doing what we’ve always done and rationalize it with our minds!  A little balance is in order here.  And a little humor (Mercury!)

images-1

When we laugh I would wager to bet that those invisible energy currents of the caduceus are in deep healing mode. What is humor if it is not loving with our minds and thinking with our hearts?

Just a little thought to keep in your heart, or a little feeling to keep in your mind.  Until next time!

Leonard Nimoy’s bold and futuristic mind

Today I indulged upon at least 8 straight episodes of Leonard Nimoy’s “In Search Of”.  To anyone who hasn’t seen this yet, I highly recommend it.  Very interesting subject matter with constant fun visuals and best of all, the man, the ultimate anchor to hold on to during these mysterious quests for meaning, Leonard Nimoy.  His narration is profound, his data precise, his style impeccable, and beneath it all is some warm and cuddly thing that is totally elusive.

isonimoy1

There are more than 130 episodes of this brilliant show on youtube.

This impression that I gained from these episodes are not unlike the impressions that endear us to the legendary Spock.  In fact, it’s often hard to separate this man from his infamous t.v. character on Star Trek.  When Nimoy wrote a memoir entitled “I Am Not Spock” fans reacted in such a disturbed manner that he responded with the sequel “I Am Spock” to ease their pain.

On to his chart!

Well– there is a problem with the chart.  The astro data bases, and a quote from his own mother in a magazine have him born at 8:30 am making him a GEMINI rising– and that gives him a Gemini Moon.  BUT– In the episode of “In Search Of” that covers Astrology, in the first few minutes he says “I am an Aries with Scorpio rising”….  This would put him born in the evening with most likely a CANCER Moon….

Nimoy1

Is this Nimoy’s chart? Gemini rising with a Gemini Moon?

Nimoy2

Or is he, like he says, a Scorpio Rising with a Cancer Moon??

Frustrating… well, at least we can look at some of the energies we KNOW are there..

Nimoy is MOST associated with MIND stuff.  Spock is MIND.  What is the energy of Nimoy’s Mercury?  It is INTENSIFIED by it’s conjunction with Uranus.  These planets are in fiery and assertive Aries along with his Sun (his life energy).  Aries is the pioneer of the zodiac, “boldly going where no man has gone before!”  Uranus is a lighting bolt.  His mind is lighting bolted into something more intense.  Uranus also brings in a sense of being DIFFERENT… of being… ALIEN?

Screen-Shot-2015-02-27-at-12-48-21-PM

Intensely (Uranus) smart (Mercury) and brave (Aries).. Mr. Spock.

This Uranus/Mercury is also conjunct the North Node which brings in a theme of fulfilling his destiny.  Evolutionary Astrology views the nodes as a point of necessary tension: the South Node being the habit that by default you slip into, perhaps causing some life problems, and the North Node being the excellent idea to embrace and move beyond those old played out problems.  In psychological astrology the nodes often point to the mother.  I couldn’t find out too much about Nimoy’s mother in my research but I DID find a pretty interesting quote that tied his parents to these Uranian (alien) themes…

“My folks came to the U.S. as immigrants, aliens, and became citizens.  I was born in Boston, a citizen, went to Hollywood and became an alien.”

trek_043_by_dave_daring-d6hrrqu

His parents became citizens and he became an alien.

On Star Trek, Spock related to his peers in a non-emotional way.  Isn’t it apt for Nimoy to have his Venus in the emotionally detached sign of Aquarius, seamlessly pulling off such Spock quotes as “If I seem insensitive to what you’re going through Captain, understand- it’s the way I am”…

Unknown-1

A humorous depiction of the emotionless alien

But no amount of character development can fool the viewers that Spock has a soft spot somewhere, and is ultimately more emotional than his lineage permits.  It’s that elusive warm and cuddly quality of his!!  Where’s the water…?

Nimoy has Jupiter, Pluto and Mars (and maybe his Moon!) all in watery Cancer.  The cuddliest of all the Water signs.  Cancer also brings in a strong tie to the past and a tendency towards nostalgia.  It’s interesting to note that the infamous “live long and prosper” hand salute was initiated by Nimoy in recalling a childhood memory.  He was in church during a ceremony where everyone was told to shut their eyes.  He broke the rules and peeked, seeing the ministers holding their hands up in that WAY, is it stood for a hebrew letter that tied into the word for God.  He brought that memory impression (Cancer) way into the future (Uranian themes!!) and the rest is history!

The future’s past!!! Live Long And Prosper!!

Thank you, Leonard Nimoy, for shining so bright during your stay here on planet Earth.  LLAP!!!!!

The close relationship of the heart and mind (Sun and Mercury)

I have a simian crease on my dominant hand.  For those who don’t know, that is one line across the palm of the hand instead of two.  It’s a blending of the head and the heart line.  Every now and then I zone out on it and certain questions start to percolate.

3f4db354cdbdd8ae907e2f1ffb00a9d1

The simian line

Does my mind blend well with my heart?  Do my feelings always match my words?  It’s a lovely idea that the head and the heart should be so entwined.  I would guess that life would feel like a waltz that you knew all of the steps to.  In astrology the Sun rules the heart and Mercury rules the mind.  It’s interesting that Mercury is never 28 degrees farther away from the Sun.  Therefore many people have their Mercuries in the same sign as their Sun.  Is it easier for these people to find that happy balance between mind and heart?

images

Mercury, aka Hermes is the winged messenger in mythology. Does a healthy balance of mind and heart result in a genuine lightheartedness?

images-1

Babies don’t have their minds working enough yet to struggle with that imbalance so they are naturally light-hearted.

Unknown-2

The challenge is to get from being a light-hearted baby to here, after all that life throws at you.

My Sun is in Leo but my Mercury is in Virgo and I definitely feel the little tug of war between these energies within me.  I have an early memory that echoes through my soul where I was so eager to show off (Leo) that I knew the word that the teacher was writing on the board.  “I know what that says!  I know what that says!”  and the teacher said “Tess, don’t—” because she wanted the other kids to sound it out, but I didn’t heed her warning and blurted out “JILL!”.  The teacher let out a sigh of frustration and that’s when my Mercury in Virgo took over.  In my head I was mortified at my know-it-all behavior.  Where’s my humility??  My Virgo mind needed that I maintain humility but my Leo heart wanted to go for the gold!  This is a theme that has repeated itself many times over in my life.

images-3

These guys want peace not war!

Mercury also rules the lungs.  This ties mind into speech as well as connectivity with all living things.  The air we breath today is the same air that was breathed by Nostradamus and Shakespeare.  In the human body the lungs and the heart are VERY intimately connected just like the Sun and Mercury.  As I learned in my Medical Assistant training class,  the blood is blue when it enters the heart’s first chamber because it has no oxygen.  After it fills up the first two chambers of the heart it goes directly into the lungs where it becomes oxygenated and RED (!) then back into the heart’s last two chambers where it is sent through the aorta to deliver this oxygen to the rest of the body.  Pretty amazing…

dTrMkggbc

The veins bring the blue blood back into the heart, where the lung dance happens and the arteries deliver the red blood back through the body.

heart-anatomy

A closer look at the blue and red heart. The pulmonary arteries and veins connect the heart and lungs. Major organ intimacy!

Is your natal Mercury in the same sign as your natal Sun or in a different one?  If understanding these relationships better can help facilitate a lighter heart, I think that is reflection well spent. YakYucks

Pharrell Williams and the beauty of Neptune

I remember when I first saw Pharrell Williams on last year’s Grammy’s and thinking three things:  What’s with the hat?  Who is this guy winning ALL of the awards?  Why is he being followed around by spacemen?

images

Neptunian illusion and mystery

Flash forward a couple of months and my sister and I are mesmerized by the 24hour music video of “Happy” streaming online.  All different kinds of everyday people dancing in their own interpretative style on the streets of L.A- one, sometimes two or three at a time.  The song/dance keeps coming to an end and unbelievably I would continually feel powerless to turn it off as the music started up again and a fresh face appeared.  The next thing I knew we had been watching for 4 hours straight- one song over and over.

Here come bad news talking this and that —   Give me all you got and don’t hold back —-   I should probably warn you I’ll be just fine —  No offense to you, don’t waste your time —-  Here’s why —-  Because I’m happy….”

By the time the choir-like back up voices come in “Happyyy…” I am just totally aboard.  The melody is so beautiful- the message so pure- I am hook, line and sinkered.  It’s this all powerful pull to be a part of this big beautiful thing– and knowing on the deepest level that I already AM a part of it.  You might ask when am I gonna get to the astrology of all this and the answer is right now with one word:  Neptune.

Neptune is love that is all embracing– all inclusive–  all forgiving.  It is divine love as opposed to Venus which is personal love.  Neptune celebrates the flawless beauty of us all.  Pisces is the sign that is connected to Neptune.  Michelangelo is a double Pisces (Sun, Moon) with Mars there too (energizing it even more) and all of this opposite Pluto (empowering it exponentially).  Look to the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel to get a feel for this type of divine love.

Part Of The Artwork Of Michelangelo That Adorns Th

ceiling of the Sistine Chapel

Pharrell is not a Pisces, but he has Mercury in Pisces (style of communicating) and his Neptune is very strongly placed- which I will get to.  He is an Aries.  A pioneer, a risk taker.  His Sun is conjunct Venus merging creativity (Venus) with his true essence (Sun).  His Moon is in earthy, steadfast Taurus and in the 5th house (performing).  He needs to create structures (Taurus)- this need is intensified opposite Uranus.  And structures he did create.  He and his partner Chad Hugo created the very successful record duo, named of all things, THE NEPTUNES!

Data Deluxe

Pharrell’s’ chart

So let’s get back to Neptune.  Wherever Neptune is found in the chart there is a potential for vulnerability on one side of the spectrum and a potential for a deep connection to the divine on the other.  Pharrell’s Neptune is in the 12th, which is the house that is associated with Neptune.  The 12th is mysterious, as is Neptune.  It is commonly associated with trouble but that is not very accurate, and also kind of a downer.  I see planets in the 12th as being connected to seeking an IDEAL, often on a subconscious level.  With Neptune in the 12th we are looking at an ideal in the realm of ideals.  Divine love in the realm of the ultimate.  There is a thirst for heaven on earth.

I remember watching him on Oprah cry tears of joy as they watched homemade videos from around the world of people dancing to “Happy”.  He created a song that unified people from all walks of life in a very powerful way.  Living up to something within him so deep, and so hard to reach.  Masterful work from an artist with his heart in the right place.
