We had two significant planetary shifts at the end of last week. Mercury’s stream of thought had been scanning the broadest horizons of Libra, and then vortexed into Scorpio in search of deeper meanings. Venus had been preferring Sagittarian heights and big-picture orientations, but then switched her fancy to Capricorn’s goal-oriented, hard-working point of view. We have moved from broad and high to deep and narrow. There is a theme of focus, more specifically a narrowed focus, to unlock latent powers.
Teilhard de Chardin says that man evolved in such a way with narrowed eyes and freed up limbs so that he could bring his hands to his face in deep concentration. Thus reflective thought was born and the rest is a very interesting history.
But what if when Galileo brought his telescope to his face he saw, among the glittering stars, a pop-up ad for a Chevrolet. What if Thoreau brought an ipad to Walden pond, or Shakespeare concerned himself with a number of ‘follower’? What if candlelight never once bounced upon a word as its ink began to dry?
Modern devices come with a slew of distractions and a narrowed focus becomes ever the more challenging.
On the other hand, imagine if some of these ancient thinkers, scientists and artists had, at their fingertips, a whole library of the noosphere, like we do. Our virtual world is a skeleton key to all kinds of knowledge, ideas and inspiration.
The question becomes how can we use our tools without being used by them? We sure have become adept at bringing our hands to our face but how can we ensure that the original goal of doing this doesn’t get lost in the sauce? This planetary shift is an invitation to find a way back to an evolutionary drive. An awakening of latent powers through the phenomenon of focus.
It is the first week of the new Season, as we shift from the bright and definite world of Leo light to the chiaroscuro of earth-magic Virgo. The original “green thumb” of the zodiac, Virgo plays with earth and sky. She blends the depth of deep earthly substances with the instant expanse of light, revealing the miracle of growth and the beginning of evolution.
She holds bushels of wheat and corn, plants that reach straight up to the day of sun. With her gift of contemplation she strives to be plant-like, always reaching for the light of new meanings, bringing them back to the deep dark roots of past experiences. The Virgin birth is the shimmering texture of the present, cultivated by this union of light and dark.
Virgo has a special relationship to memory. With special pieces of texture, like that dress she wore, or the way the sun was setting, or that cold snap in the air, meanings sprout up like crops from the deep earth of the past. Her garden extends from past to future but it only exists in the illuminated texture of the present.
For Virgo, time moves in cycles. It folds in on itself producing a Virgin birth of meaning. Like a fibonacci pattern, this kind of time makes meaning grow in spiral form. Extending outward from seemingly infinitesimal roots of self-similar experiences. It was always you there, in those different places, at those different moments, always you.
Experiences shape who you are in order for you to shape future experience, in order for you to find a frequency worth cultivating.
What texture does your present have now? Can you hear its signature frequency? Would you like to change it?
You may have to roll up your sleeves and take it to the field, so to speak; a place where the deep substance of soul can meet the broad expanse of light. A place where memories work unconsciously to mold ideas out of the mysteries of inspiration.
This place might be an actual place. Your “field” might be your backyard, your stairwell, your kitchen at dusk. For who knows what reason, this place puts you in an optimum balance of blending deep substance with the broad expanse. Inspiration becomes real and reality becomes inspiring.
Your “field” might also be an activity, like yoga, reading, playing music or sports. The field may take many shapes. Most importantly It is and always has been yours. Visiting it and cultivating it seems to bring back magic to your fingertips.
As Voltaire famously said “you must cultivate your own garden.”
Happy cultivating and as always, happy astro pondering!
A Full Moon eclipse crowns the last day of November, dazzling in Gemini before the start of December.
Gemini sparkles with reflection of thought. The flint of the fire, and all we’ve been taught. Sparkling and glittering for centuries back- sensing a freedom and enlarging the crack, so more creativity can leak in, and keep us on track.
The archer pulls back the string of his bow. The arrow in flight shows the way life likes to grow.
From his book, The Phenomenon of Man, Teilhard de Chardin says this of Man’s true place in evolution: “Man is not the center of the universe as we once thought in our simplicity, but something much more wonderful- the arrow pointing the way to the final unification of the world in terms of life. Man alone constitutes the last-born, the freshest, the most complicated, the most subtle of all the successive layers of life.”
Sagittarius, the Season we are in right now, is that very arrow. The life of life itself, and it’s direction of growth.
With love, the future sets us free! The distant future, and the one of immediacy. In a world where nothing is static- the question does become, in which direction are you moving, and from where have you come? This is a question that can be asked at any given moment.
Sagittarius Season is bubbling with an effervescense, spreading with delightful incandescense, to remind us of our truest essence. Outward on streets, lights spring up as expected, inward a fire glows warm with direction.
Mercury will be in the deepest degrees of Scorpio on Monday, for the Gemini Full Moon eclipse. Gemini rules the hands. Teilhard de Chardin says that our arms became free, so we could hold our hands to our face, with narrower eyes, we could percieve what we hold in front of us- and thus, reflective thought was born. He says “Man came silently into this world”.
The next day, as December begins, the trickster goes into Sagittarius, with a growing confidence. The trickster realizes he holds the keys, his hands are free, like the sky and the sea.
Venus, the love goddess stirs in Scorpio. She overhears the trickster’s epiphany, and creates a stormy, passionate symphony. Seeing her gifts of art and love, as the fire that holds everything together from above. She breathes in the sweetness of a vibrant red rose, from her delicate hands, the whole world she does hold.
Mars moving onward in Aries in an epic voyage that’s lasted half a year! His lovers tune seducing his soul, freeing his vibrations to a place that is bold. As Robert Frost said, “Freedom lies in being bold.”
Jupiter moving away from Pluto and into a tighter conjunction with Saturn, in Capricorn, in tension with Aries’ fire. The strategy of caution serving hope in a most noble of ways. We’ve learned so much in these past few hundred days.
Uranus in Taurus- the evolution of nature, becoming more natural, to reflect on
Neptune in Pisces- the dream in the Seasonal archer’s heart- As Ralph Waldo Emerson said “we aim above the mark to hit the mark.”
The Moon as mentioned will be Full in Gemini at the beginning of the week, the sign of the hands, Aristotle’s “tool of tools”. Evidence of Sagittarian spirit shimmer in the stone carvings of the ancient world, at the skill of ancient hands.
Full Moons are nights of illumination.
As Langston Hughes said
“I look at my own body With eyes no longer blind-
And see that my own hands
The world that’s in my mind.”
In the later hours of Tuesday night she wanes gibbous in Cancer, her true habitat of Moon. Bears are beginnng to head to their caves, light is dwindling in the days. In the flourescence of the Horse’s Season, a Cancer Moon is a perfect reason, to find some Hooga with dimmed down lights. Store some power in the soul’s delight!
Friday, Saturday and most of Sunday host a Leo Moon, and the atmosphere is full of fire. The fire of expression! The radiant life of love. In our upward flight that moves to the right, who can push aside this Eternal delight. As Venus comes into trine with all encompassing Neptune, echoes of the Four Tops ring out into the ether- Reach out..
By Sunday afternoon, a Virgo Moon wanes on- in the spirit of learning, and the ever-in-motion weaving of the imagination with experience.
In which direction are you going, and where are you coming from?
