Venus and the Virtues of Negativity

Ladies and gents we are about to explore the mysterious functions of Venus, a.k.a Aphrodite.  Alchemically she is linked to the metal copper.  Her reputation revolves around love and beauty.

All aboard!

First stop, the human body, specifically the circulatory system.

circulatory-system

Hmm.. strange first stop but okay.  In this picture of the human circulatory system we see that we are all red and blue inside.

In the last post we talked about how Mars, a.k.a iron is what makes the blood red when it combines with oxygen (iron as hemoglobin).  It is this oxygenated red blood that travels through the arteries and nourishes all of our organs.

homework boy

What is all the blue then?

Quite simply the blue blood is now WITHOUT oxygen because the organs have used it all up.  It now travels through the veins back to the heart where it will become oxygenated again through our breath (and that hemoglobin!)

VenusCardboardCutoutStandeeStandupRomanGoddessLove-500x500

Ok but where does she fit in?  This is a post about Venus?

Let’s start with her name, Venus.  Quite similar to the word VEIN is it not?  And for that matter Mars sounds more like ARtery.

german_painter_adam_and_eve

In the same way, Adam uses Mars’ letters and Eve uses Venus’ letters

NGS Picture ID:1249550

Ram is practically the word Mars backwards (as well as it’s zodiac-associated symbol)  And EWE is Eve with a small middle letter adjustment!

How-an-electrical-cable-is-made-1

Eve, ewe and now ELE.  ELEctricity is conducted most often through Venus’ signature metal, copper.

TS_126408633

MAgnetism is found in MArs’ signature metal iron by means of the magnetized iron ore attracting to it more iron.

Back to the blood..  it seems to be an intuitive understanding that Mars and red blood go hand in hand.  Less intuitive is Venus’ blue blood, the blood that is WITHOUT oxygen.

ELEctric lightning produces NEGATIVE ions in the air.  Negative ions are said to produce numerous health benefits mostly by relaxing the body and bringing it back into balance

aphrodite-6

Ah.. back into balance.  This is beginning to sound like me.

image_006_waterfall

Water falls and infrared saunas are other places where negative ions are found.  Can you not feel the affects just by looking at this image?

Venus is introducing the principle of PASSIVITY and RESTORATION (negativity without it’s bad connotations).  It seeks balance by being passive.  It trusts in nature and knows there is an order more divine here than anything we could actively cook up ourselves (leave that to Mars!).

Let’s talk a little more about it’s signature metal, Copper.

4066553303_dd5401d1a0_o

Here is our Lady of Liberty displaying copper in all it’s beauty when it oxidizes in salty air and turns green.  For the Ellis Island immigrants she looked shiny and bright copper-colored.

So some of Copper’s themes have to do with electricity, and this rather pretty light green tint.

Northern lights: Spectacular footage captured in Iceland - video

Therefore we can see her strange and mysterious signature here in the Northern Lights.  Mars’ lodestone will point towards this.  Mars being attracted to Venus.

Here she is in a firefly

Venus points to the blue blood and the green color that copper turns.  Where else do we see blue and green?

Unknown-1

Everywhere on our home planet Earth!

Earth demonstrates magnificent beauty especially when it’s left alone (Venus).  National Parks are an excellent example of this.

Venus doing what she does best: nothing.

Venus knows how to let nature BE her order.  She knows to listen, to notice, to meet and behold.

ULE1pME

She knows how to befriend by not imposing any will upon the other.  This photo is from Argentina’s extreme and controversial petting zoo.  In 2 decades there have been no reports of the animals lashing out to the humans.  The zoo owners claim that all they do for these animals is make sure they are comfortable and well-fed.

Our bodies are constantly sending electrical messages from our brain to various body parts.  Electricity is needed to make anything happen, from blinking our eyes to making ourselves a sandwich.  Electrical signals happen when the cells switch from a negative charge to a positive charge.

iStock_000012229229_260_tcm4-653837

The natural resting state of your cells is negativity, a.k.a Venus.  Leave the action to Mars (positivity)

Once again I will bring in the Wizard of Oz because I simply can’t help it.  The Emerald City looks a lot like the northern lights married the Statue of Liberty.  Not only that but like the North Pole, it serves as center of attraction of which our heroes and heroine are pulled towards.

emeraldcity

We’re off to see the Wizard!

But what happens when they get there?  What does the Wizard say?

Wizard-of-Oz-Caps-the-wizard-of-oz-2028565-720-536

He tells them they already have what they are looking for.  They don’t need to do ANYTHING except realize it.  Venus has spoken.

In closing, Venus teaches us the virtues of negativity and how non-doing can restore and bring back balance.  It is a side of life that is often ignored, especially in our fast paced modern society.  We can consciously feel the blissful effects of negativity by sitting by running water and soaking up those negative ions, or noticing the peace that is felt after a rainstorm.  Another fun tip, beeswax candles also emit negative ions.

Bee-apis

To the bees, thank you for being a friend.

The Tao Te Ching and the mysterious number 4

This post is a continuation of the last post about the Cardinal Cross and Venus’ function within that.  In the post below we went over the idea that Libra and Aries are related to each other symbolically by both celebrating symmetry.  The difference is that Aries likes to fight and be number one.  Aries has to be number one because it just IS number one.  It is the first day of spring when the leaves push through the pavement.

3664217-Green-grass-growing-from-crack-in-old-asphalt-pavement-Stock-Photo

And there it is- a Y shape – the symbol for Aries. The symbol for the “ONE”

The Tao Te Ching states: “one produced two, two produced three, three produced all numbers”.  If one is Aries then 2 must be Libra.  Libra is opposite Aries.  Libra is female and Aries is male.  Libra introduces the concept of partnership, and the “other”. In the last post we explored the phenomena that Capricorn (the Sea Goat), the 4th sign on the Cardinal Cross, seems to be a marriage between Aries (the Ram) and Cancer (the Crab).

A man (Aries) marries the woman (Libra) and makes a family (Cancer).  It looks a lot like Cancer is number 3, symbolically, in terms of the Tao Te Ching.

unfpa11

The family is represented as the number 3- after the union of one and two. Aries plus Libra equals Cancer.

In these terms then “all numbers” as stated by the Tao Te Ching would then be society, everyone else in the world.  Families multiply the population of the world and we have a thriving planet of constant expansion.

shutterstock_86973980

People get born and population constantly increases. Man plus Woman equals Family equals Society. Society is the 4th number. The number that represents “all numbers”

So the 4th number is the Capricorn, the Sea Goat, and it represents “all numbers”.  Interestingly enough Capricorn’s planet, Saturn, is displayed as an upside down 4.  In the last post we discussed how the imaginary Sea Goat representing the planet of concrete reality (Saturn) was a bit of a paradox.  But that might make sense because it came out of the magic of Venus (marriage) and Venus to begin with represents opposites and paradox.  And here again, the Tao Te Ching coincides with Capricorn being the 4th number and voila- there it is- just upside down!

saturn_180x180

The symbol for Saturn looks like an upside down four.

2000px-Jupiter_symbol.svg

Jupiter looks like a four! And symbolically Jupiter represents all things OPPOSITE Saturn. Jupiter EXPANDS while Saturn CONTRACTS.

Psychologically, the ONE could be “I” and the TWO could be “anything I am noticing” making the 3 “my connecting what I notice to some internal truth” and then the FOUR “experiencing the unus mundus, or the one world” where we realize that duality is an illusion.  This is the place of synchronicity that Carl Jung talks about.  It is a “time out of time”.  It is “once upon a time”.

So perhaps that is what lies behind the double paradox of Capricorn, as number four.  The imaginary Sea Goat and the upside down number 4 points to stepping back into a place, even if just for a moment, where we experience the one world.  It is there that we become momentarily disillusioned.  Libra wants to take us there.  The number 2 (Libra) beckons the number one (Aries) to make the number 3 (Cancer) from where we can experience the number 4 (Capricorn).

Libra is also the artist.  Let’s look at how Art can perform this magic.

UnknownArt (#2 Libra) beckons the onlooker (#1 Aries) to make an inner connection (#3 Cancer) in which you experience a momentary glimpse of the interconnectedness of everything (#4, “all numbers” Capricorn).

Makes me want to reread the entire Tao Te Ching!

Leonard Nimoy’s bold and futuristic mind

Today I indulged upon at least 8 straight episodes of Leonard Nimoy’s “In Search Of”.  To anyone who hasn’t seen this yet, I highly recommend it.  Very interesting subject matter with constant fun visuals and best of all, the man, the ultimate anchor to hold on to during these mysterious quests for meaning, Leonard Nimoy.  His narration is profound, his data precise, his style impeccable, and beneath it all is some warm and cuddly thing that is totally elusive.

isonimoy1

There are more than 130 episodes of this brilliant show on youtube.

This impression that I gained from these episodes are not unlike the impressions that endear us to the legendary Spock.  In fact, it’s often hard to separate this man from his infamous t.v. character on Star Trek.  When Nimoy wrote a memoir entitled “I Am Not Spock” fans reacted in such a disturbed manner that he responded with the sequel “I Am Spock” to ease their pain.

On to his chart!

Well– there is a problem with the chart.  The astro data bases, and a quote from his own mother in a magazine have him born at 8:30 am making him a GEMINI rising– and that gives him a Gemini Moon.  BUT– In the episode of “In Search Of” that covers Astrology, in the first few minutes he says “I am an Aries with Scorpio rising”….  This would put him born in the evening with most likely a CANCER Moon….

Nimoy1

Is this Nimoy’s chart? Gemini rising with a Gemini Moon?

Nimoy2

Or is he, like he says, a Scorpio Rising with a Cancer Moon??

Frustrating… well, at least we can look at some of the energies we KNOW are there..

Nimoy is MOST associated with MIND stuff.  Spock is MIND.  What is the energy of Nimoy’s Mercury?  It is INTENSIFIED by it’s conjunction with Uranus.  These planets are in fiery and assertive Aries along with his Sun (his life energy).  Aries is the pioneer of the zodiac, “boldly going where no man has gone before!”  Uranus is a lighting bolt.  His mind is lighting bolted into something more intense.  Uranus also brings in a sense of being DIFFERENT… of being… ALIEN?

Screen-Shot-2015-02-27-at-12-48-21-PM

Intensely (Uranus) smart (Mercury) and brave (Aries).. Mr. Spock.

This Uranus/Mercury is also conjunct the North Node which brings in a theme of fulfilling his destiny.  Evolutionary Astrology views the nodes as a point of necessary tension: the South Node being the habit that by default you slip into, perhaps causing some life problems, and the North Node being the excellent idea to embrace and move beyond those old played out problems.  In psychological astrology the nodes often point to the mother.  I couldn’t find out too much about Nimoy’s mother in my research but I DID find a pretty interesting quote that tied his parents to these Uranian (alien) themes…

“My folks came to the U.S. as immigrants, aliens, and became citizens.  I was born in Boston, a citizen, went to Hollywood and became an alien.”

trek_043_by_dave_daring-d6hrrqu

His parents became citizens and he became an alien.

On Star Trek, Spock related to his peers in a non-emotional way.  Isn’t it apt for Nimoy to have his Venus in the emotionally detached sign of Aquarius, seamlessly pulling off such Spock quotes as “If I seem insensitive to what you’re going through Captain, understand- it’s the way I am”…

Unknown-1

A humorous depiction of the emotionless alien

But no amount of character development can fool the viewers that Spock has a soft spot somewhere, and is ultimately more emotional than his lineage permits.  It’s that elusive warm and cuddly quality of his!!  Where’s the water…?

Nimoy has Jupiter, Pluto and Mars (and maybe his Moon!) all in watery Cancer.  The cuddliest of all the Water signs.  Cancer also brings in a strong tie to the past and a tendency towards nostalgia.  It’s interesting to note that the infamous “live long and prosper” hand salute was initiated by Nimoy in recalling a childhood memory.  He was in church during a ceremony where everyone was told to shut their eyes.  He broke the rules and peeked, seeing the ministers holding their hands up in that WAY, is it stood for a hebrew letter that tied into the word for God.  He brought that memory impression (Cancer) way into the future (Uranian themes!!) and the rest is history!

The future’s past!!! Live Long And Prosper!!

Thank you, Leonard Nimoy, for shining so bright during your stay here on planet Earth.  LLAP!!!!!

The close relationship of the heart and mind (Sun and Mercury)

I have a simian crease on my dominant hand.  For those who don’t know, that is one line across the palm of the hand instead of two.  It’s a blending of the head and the heart line.  Every now and then I zone out on it and certain questions start to percolate.

3f4db354cdbdd8ae907e2f1ffb00a9d1

The simian line

Does my mind blend well with my heart?  Do my feelings always match my words?  It’s a lovely idea that the head and the heart should be so entwined.  I would guess that life would feel like a waltz that you knew all of the steps to.  In astrology the Sun rules the heart and Mercury rules the mind.  It’s interesting that Mercury is never 28 degrees farther away from the Sun.  Therefore many people have their Mercuries in the same sign as their Sun.  Is it easier for these people to find that happy balance between mind and heart?

images

Mercury, aka Hermes is the winged messenger in mythology. Does a healthy balance of mind and heart result in a genuine lightheartedness?

images-1

Babies don’t have their minds working enough yet to struggle with that imbalance so they are naturally light-hearted.

Unknown-2

The challenge is to get from being a light-hearted baby to here, after all that life throws at you.

My Sun is in Leo but my Mercury is in Virgo and I definitely feel the little tug of war between these energies within me.  I have an early memory that echoes through my soul where I was so eager to show off (Leo) that I knew the word that the teacher was writing on the board.  “I know what that says!  I know what that says!”  and the teacher said “Tess, don’t—” because she wanted the other kids to sound it out, but I didn’t heed her warning and blurted out “JILL!”.  The teacher let out a sigh of frustration and that’s when my Mercury in Virgo took over.  In my head I was mortified at my know-it-all behavior.  Where’s my humility??  My Virgo mind needed that I maintain humility but my Leo heart wanted to go for the gold!  This is a theme that has repeated itself many times over in my life.

images-3

These guys want peace not war!

Mercury also rules the lungs.  This ties mind into speech as well as connectivity with all living things.  The air we breath today is the same air that was breathed by Nostradamus and Shakespeare.  In the human body the lungs and the heart are VERY intimately connected just like the Sun and Mercury.  As I learned in my Medical Assistant training class,  the blood is blue when it enters the heart’s first chamber because it has no oxygen.  After it fills up the first two chambers of the heart it goes directly into the lungs where it becomes oxygenated and RED (!) then back into the heart’s last two chambers where it is sent through the aorta to deliver this oxygen to the rest of the body.  Pretty amazing…

dTrMkggbc

The veins bring the blue blood back into the heart, where the lung dance happens and the arteries deliver the red blood back through the body.

heart-anatomy

A closer look at the blue and red heart. The pulmonary arteries and veins connect the heart and lungs. Major organ intimacy!

Is your natal Mercury in the same sign as your natal Sun or in a different one?  If understanding these relationships better can help facilitate a lighter heart, I think that is reflection well spent. YakYucks

The Crying Game. Water planets and comfortability in expressing emotion.

I was thinking about scenes in movies when I didn’t quite feel the emotion that was being portrayed.  The big one that came to mind was the ending of “Seven” when Brad Pitt is in the cornfield asking Kevin Spacey “what’s in the box??” knowing full well that it is Gwyneth Paltrow’s severed head.

brad-pitt-se7en-seven-end-scene1

A bit of a misfire of relatable emotions (IMO)

Believe me, I am not knocking Brad Pitt.  I think he is a tour de force of an actor.  But this scene got me thinking about how some actors seem very natural and easy with expressing vulnerable emotions while others maybe not as much.

Brad Pitt’s chart shows no Water planets (except Neptune).  He is runs mostly on Earth and Fire.  My latest favorite movie with him was “World War Z”, and you better believe he was (in my opinion) EXTREMELY effective at displaying a courageous (Fire) hero who gets the job done (Earth).

I also think Brad Pitt is very effective conveying deep emotions BUT, usually this is done by an UNDERSTATED approach.  A subtle look, or a quick tear up, but NOT a prolonged cry-fest.  A prolonged cry-fest is hard to make look authentic, UNLESS you have some Water planets to help you out.

Everyone has emotions, just like everyone has a Moon their natal chart.  Water planets don’t give people more emotion but they DO (ideally) make EXPRESSING emotion a bit more comfortable and natural.  This is especially true with Scorpio, because Scorpio is all about emotional power and control.

images-6

James Dean let’s the feelings fly with Mars squaring his Scorpio Moon. He is completely comfortable in showing vulnerability which works to set him in a league of his own and pave the way for future actors.

image001

Leonardo Di Caprio’s 2nd house Scorpio Sun and Scorpio Mars allows him to rely on his resources (2nd house) of emotional power and control (Scorpio). His life energy and driving force (Sun and Mars) dedicated to harnessing this emotional strength.

Dallas Buyers Club

Matthew McConaughey has both his Sun and Mercury in Scorpio. Not only does he emote with wild abandon when needed, he also has the habit of taking up character role that talk (Mercury) about the endless mysterious of life (Scorpio)

Compare these Scorpio cry-looks to some Cancer cry-looks.

big-tom-hanks-crying-bed

Tom Hanks’ Cancer Moon makes us want to hug him and tell him everything will be alright. Cancer emotions being expressed can bring out the “awww” in most of us.

tom_cruise_the_master_movie_review

Even Tom Cruise, with all of his macho roles is a bit of a Teddy Bear when sad thanks to his Cancer Sun.

And finally some Pisces…

998AMG_Bruce_Willis_102

Bruce Willis captures the perfect “Savior-Martyr” emotional look with his thoughtful teary expressions. Sun and Mercury in Pisces.

MM2-AMC_2528567k

On the other end of the Pisces emotional spectrum is that of the “victim” which Jon Hamm displays here (Sun and Mercury in Pisces)

Actors who do not have Water planets, when faced with a role that needs to display emotion will often naturally take a SUBDUED approach.

movies_the_descendants_george_clooney

George Clooney has no Water planets (except Neptune) but he gets the emotion across with stillness (Taurus Sun) and a perceived stoic groundedness (double Earth).

Or restort to other methods…

picture-13

No-Water planeted Al Pacino expresses anger with ease thanks to the Fire in his chart. When it comes to expressing vulnerability a tactic like covering the face can help the awkward process.

Here comes the Sun: Knowing your life energy. Part 2- Water

Your Sun sign keys you into understanding the fundamental energy that you run on.  There are four basic different categories of this energy: Earth, Water, Air and Fire.  Start with understanding your element and then move on to understand it’s specific qualities within your sign.

Today we are looking at Water energy.

Water energy is emotional and feeling oriented.  This energy is tuned into subtleties like no other.  Water runs the deepest of the four- it is the most inward.  It needs privacy at times to refuel.  Like Earth, it is Yin therefore it is geared more towards receiving than projecting outward.  Water reminds us how much takes place below the surface.

deep-water-live-hd-wallpapers-2-3-s-307x512

Water energy runs deep, bringing in elements of the subconscious.

Breaking Water down further into the Modes we get:

Cardinal Water: Cancer.  Cardinal energy INITIATES.  Think about this inward emotional energy and add that concept of initiation and that can bring us naturally to family and early home- where most of our emotional energy was INITIATED.  Cancer energy yearns to attain emotional security.

Henry_David_Thoreau

Double Cancer, Henry David Thoreau built a home on Emerson’s land where he stayed and wrote “Walden Pond”. He spent his days tuning into a quieter and more simple way of life to better understand society and human development.

Fixed Water: Scorpio.  Fixed energy MAINTAINS.  Now this inward feeling oriented energy is being maintained and we can be brought to the idea sacred emotional unions.  “I like this feeling- I want to keep it.  I want to STAY here and explore”.

images-1

Georgia O’Keefe has Scorpio stellium (cluster of planets) including her Sun and Moon, all on the Ascendant. Her identity (ASC) is very much consumed with deep emotional power, often integrating symbols of death into vivid color schemes. This stellium is opposed by Pluto and Neptune adding a profound (Pluto) transcendental tone (Neptune).

Mutable Water: Pisces.  Mutable energy ADAPTS, CHANGES, and REFINES.  The subtle feeling energy now is ready to adjust and improve hence we are brought to such concepts as compassion and forgiveness.  The sensitivity is refined and reaching always to attain new heights.

alexander-mcqueen-and-model

Alexander McQueen has his Sun and Moon in Pisces in the self expressive 5th house. His fashion designs reflect Pisces’ ever evolving rich imagination in search of the sublimely beautiful. His Sun is opposite Pluto bringing in that sense of the profound.

Next post we will explore exciting energy of fire!
