The Spell of Animism. Full Moon Eclipse in Taurus

Metaphorcast 11/15-21, 2021

If the season of the witch has yet to cast its spell on you, this week’s Full Moon Eclipse in earth-magic Taurus might just do the trick. The longest lasting partial eclipse of the century will captivate its audience in the predawn hours of Friday, November 19th. The earth’s shadow will slowly cast over the Moon for a duration of nearly 3 and half hours, with its peak coverage around 4am Eastern Time. The cast of this shadow will likely display a deep red hue and be visible across the Americas, much of Asia, parts of Europe and West Africa.

If you happen to sleep through this wondrous event, let’s hope that your dreams may connect with this widespread magic. There is another kind of sleep however, non-rejuvenating and devoid of dreams. This sleep is one to be wary of. It is the ‘sleep of the senses’ that the Earth spirit warns Faust about. It is a closing off to the expressiveness of the natural world.

In his book, “The Spell of the Sensuous”, David Abram describes the human experience of magic as “our ancestral animistic awareness of the world as alive and expressive.” He says that everything ‘speaks’, and it is only through our creation of the written word that ‘the stones fall silent.’ What once was some grooves on a rock expressing meaning to us has become a paragraph in the New York Times. The alphabet and the written word is entirely human-constructed, not even the spirit of breath shapes it, the way the spoken word does. Far from saying that the written word is ‘bad’ he simply emphasizes what the written word really is: magic. This is why one can ‘cast a spell’ and ‘spell a word’. He says, “As non-human animals, plants, and even ‘inanimate’ rivers once spoke to our oral ancestors, so the ostensibly ‘inert’ letters o n the page now speak to us! This is a form of animism that we take for granted, but it is animism nonetheless- as mysterious as a talking stone.”

Even if you sleep through the Full Moon eclipse, be sure to rouse your senses enough to realize something important; the world is magical and we have the capacity to be magicians!

As always, happy astro pondering!

For more on David Abram, here is a wonderful interview where he talks about animism, magic and the senses.

In Search of Certainty. Taurus Season Begins.

Philosopher Bertrand Russell said “What men want is not knowledge, but certainty.”

Taurus is the sturdiest sign in the zodiac.  It is life’s way of building upon something certain.  As inventor, cosmologist Arthur M. Young says, “life can only start at the molecular level” because “molecules obey laws.”

A new Season begins on Monday, April 19th, with the Sun and Mercury moving into sturdy Taurus.

Have you ever asked yourself, in a good grand sweep of a way, what it is that you are building?

Young sees purpose to be synonymous with light and absolute freedom.  The problem is, with absolute freedom it can’t fulfill any goals.  It must then descend into matter where it loses its freedoms in various stages until, at the molecular level it has none.  Having no freedoms it responds perfectly to natural laws, and therefore becomes something one can count on.  It becomes certain and definite in a universe built on uncertainty (freedom).  It becomes the means in which a goal can be carried out.

He talks about the particular point, when light’s involution becomes life’s evolution.  This happens at the molecular level right before plants learn to grow.  Rocks can’t grow.  The plants have managed to recapture a freedom.  Young calls this transition “the turn”, and says it is essentially a remembering of purpose.

Colin Wilson said, “We all instinctively turn towards meaning, towards situations that will stimulate us, as a flower turns to the sun.”

Just like these daydreaming sunflowers we must turn our heads towards the “sun” this Season, towards the stable nucleus of a sense of purpose.  If we can’t do this, we will be building something anyway, but our blueprints are vulnerable to the secret ownerships of others whose opinions we deem way too valuable.

The Lyra meteor shower will also occur this week with its peak activity on the 22nd and 23rd.  The shooting stars will have to compete with some bright moonlight, and will emanate from the constellation Lyra, which represents Orpheus’ lyre of Greek mythology.  The most famous myth of Orpheus is his descent to the underworld to free his lover Eurydice.  After charming Hades and Persephone with his music, they allowed them to leave together, back up to the world of the living on one condition: that he not look back until they were in the full daylight.  Of course, moments before they reached the light he did look back, and she disappeared forever.  Orpheus, in his doubt, lost everything he had worked so hard for.

Voltaire said “Doubt is not a pleasant condition but certainty is an absurd one.”  Heisenberg eradicated certainty from the measurable world.  Yet, at some level, certainty is needed.  Just as life builds on the law-abiding molecules, people build upon the certainties of meaning.

Do you know what you are building?

Happy building and happy astro pondering!

To Everything Turn Turn Turn. Venus enters Taurus.

Venus will go into Taurus on Wednesday, April 14th.  Salvador Dali was born with Venus in Taurus (and was a Taurus himself).  He famously said, “I don’t do drugs.  I am drugs.”  Venus in Taurus loves a good embodiment.

Just like a Dali painting, Venus in Taurus has a far out side.  To the furthest reaches of the universe in fact.

Last post we explored the ideas of inventor and cosmologist, Arthur M. Young and we will stick with him again in this post, namely his ideas about the torus.

What makes the torus such an interesting shape? - Quora

Taurus is the 2nd sign of the zodiac, and the torus field is composed of two rotating circularities.  One rotation is edging around the donut, the other is through the middle and back up around the side.

It is the rotation that is of importance with the torus, and only the rotation.  The rotation is what connects the inner most part of you (and any other creature) with the farthest reaches of the universe.  Are you beginning to sense a melting clock?

This is quite natural. As Young explains, in the “phase dimension” (theorized by Arthur Eddington) rotation is all that counts.  There is no time.  With this dimension Eddington discovered that the curvature of space-time is the same as the rotation that’s implicit in the photon.  The curve of space-time and the curve of uncertainty (that exists in each photon) appear to be the same thing. He did what seems to still be impossible today. He married quantum theory with relativity, merging the infinitesimally small with the grand expanse.

Young puts an extra spin to this when he said that the dimension of rotation is also the dimension of choice, a freedom always present in some capacity. He also discovered that the mathematical formula for the torus and the Einstein-Eddington hypersphere was the same.

Make it two. Eddington’s on his way.

Taurus then, is the shape of everything, a dimension of pure rotation, connecting us as separate and willful individuals to the farthest reaches of space by design.  By our use of choice, we embody this dimension.

Dali said “I dont do drugs.  I am drugs.”  In the toroidal universe, you don’t make choices you are choice. You are free-will (what Young equates with uncertainty).  It is uncertainty, or free-will that underlies all existence.  The photon and free-will are one and the same, rotating in sync with the great sweeps of space-time.

Have you ever felt a certain good choice to strengthen you on a real bodily level?  How about the opposite?  Have you ever been so out of touch with your own power of choice that you felt somewhat outside of yourself?

With this transit it is time to get back in sync with the curve!  Trust in your body’s feedback when it comes to choices.  It’s, shall we say, well-connected. 😉

Venus will rotate in Taurus until May 8th when she will jump into Gemini!

Happy choosing, and as always happy astro pondering!

Nothing Happens Until Something Moves. New Moon in Aquarius

In 1936 a not-yet-famous Tennessee William sat in the audience of Ibsens’ play “Ghosts.” But he didn’t sit for long. The play soon moved him so much that it moved him straight out of his seat and he had to pace up and down in the back aisle.

This Thursday the 11th, we have a New Moon in Aquarius, the sign of the Water Bearer, the sign of us, of human beings, with full potential to feel things and allow ourselves to be moved.

You can practically see movement in Aquarius’ glyph of two wavy lines.

Einstein said, “Nothing happens until something moves. When something vibrates, the electrons of the entire universe resonate with it. Everything is connected.”

Most of the planets in the sky are currently buzzing in Aquarius. Uranus, the planet associated with Aquarius is in the self-sustaining sign of Taurus, along with Mars, resonating like a Tibetan singing bowl over the rest of the buzz.

Taurus, often associated with money, is also the notion of taking stock in something. Just think what would have not happened if Tennessee Williams put no stock in the emotion that propelled him off his seat.

What has been moving you lately? Anything worthy of taking stock in? Anything worthy of cultivating?

The movement you feel might be strong enough to propel you off your seat, but it also might be more subtle. A special shift, and all of a sudden some chemicals inside stir. Maybe you feel a quickening of energy. Maybe the other side of the universe feels it too!

The movement of Aquarius’ wavy lines hint at the magic of feedback loops, always at work in the present moment.

Alfred North Whitehead said “What we perceive as the present is the vivid fringe of memory tinged with anticipation.”

That sure adds a dose of dynamism to the moment! The fringe of memory and the tinge of anticipation, fringe and tinge! Vibrating sounds, vibration abounds!

These feedback loops show the logic of an optimistic attitude (i.e don’t let that fringe sabotage the tinge and vice versa!) Such a correspondence also shows the grand potential of letting art, love, or anything else move us.

Put some stock in those special emotions!

Full Wolf Moon in the Sign of the Lion. Bound in the Unbounded.

The first Full Moon of the year will be here on Thursday the 28th.  The January Full Moon is known as the Wolf Moon, as it was traditionally believed that wolves howled more at this time because of winter hunger.  The Wolf Moon will paradoxically be in the sign of Leo, making it a breed of dog and cat.  An archetypal mix of belonging and spontaneity.

Many good dogs eagerly anticipate the arrival of their person after a long day of work- and the sight of a sparkly ball sends the average cat into a multiverse of possible spontaneous reactions.  What does this Moon speak of in combining these two themes?

Could it be that we, as humans, are curious creatures whose belonging becomes more clear in moments of spontaneity?

Is this why we laugh with those we feel most at home with? Is this evolution itself making sure that we stay supple and moveable, like a good flame?

Opposite this Moon will be a trinity of Aquarius, with Sun Jupiter and Saturn.  The sign of freedom, lit up and made expansive by Jupiter, yet with it’s own laws of Saturn.  The age-old debate on Free Will.  Is it ours or is it not?

Squaring all of this is Mars in Taurus near the Great Awakener, Uranus.  Taurus is wonderful magic of homeostasis, always at work in our physiology.

And maybe herein lies a clue.  We are free, but our body knows things that are good for us, and ‘good for us’ speaks on so many different levels (emotionally, physically, morally, for example).

William James said, “the question of free will is insoluble on strictly psychological grounds”. Is he referring to the mysterious balancing act of our physiology, as well as hinting at some greater mystery?

Is to be truly free to surrender to your true being?

Anchored in flight!

Scorpio, Taurus’ opposite, knows that to some extent, the Will must surrender itself to the mystery of inner balance.

Free Will is embedded in the word spontaneity comes from the latin root sponte, “of one’s own will.” The spontaneous delights of children are likely the best reminder of how good it is to grab a joy where it can be found.  “Kiss it as it flies” as William Blake would say.

Maybe this Full Moon can inspire us to do this. And in a moment of free-willed joy feel a solid place of belonging.

Bound to be unbound, and unbound you are bound to come back around, to where you are bound?

Anyway, a howl-roar to the first Full Moon of 2021!

The Future of Value. Uranus Moves Direct

The planet of future moves forward today in Taurus, the sign of value, after having been retrograde since mid August.

Uranus has been called the Great Awakener.  These awakenings are born from a kind of shaking, a moving, a turbulence, or perhaps a strange moment of wonder that renders us back to a freshness as a beginner.

The past year has shook the entire globe up into a collective new reality.  The question is, from such a change, what is the future of value itself?

Is there a future where wellbeing is deemed more valuable than money?  What would such a future look like?  John Lennon painted such a future, from his imagination outward.  When he said he was not the only dreamer, he understood full well the joy of the beginner.  Embracing what is fresh, and yet to be.

Uranus is the planet of future because it is the essence of yet to be.  In Taurus we tie in an element of goodness.  Taurus is the kinds of response we prefer to hold on to, to constitute ourselves, to be secure and strong.  Be it food, thought, relations, environment, tradition, habit, what have you.  Taurus uses whatever it can to continue to constitute itself and make itself strong.

The future lives in every moment, as we are free to shake off the imposing qualities of the immediate past (as philosopher Alfred North Whitehead talks about) and create something new with a “bid for freedom”.  In this way, we step into the realm of yet to be instead of sinking into the swamp of that’s just the way it is.

As the future gains its forward stride, cultivate moments of well-being, that inform you from the inside the true meaning of value.  Lightning visions of intuition may find you in such moments, illuminating this question even more, then gone in a flash, yet hopefully rediscovered through… pondering!

As always, happy astro pondering!

Uranus won’t retrograde again until August 2022, and will be in Taurus until April 2026.

Mars into Taurus- the Will to Stabilize

In the light of recent events, this title’s concept will likely be quickly felt. Felt in the right spot too. That is the mysterious space of the internal mileu, where good and bad are physiologically known.

It is through the avoiding of what’s bad, and the seeking and assimilating of what’s good that keeps us in a state of homeostasis. Just imagine what would happen if we always ignored that good drink of water when we were thirsty, or took no precaution to step out of the way of that bad oncoming city bus.

These value judgments are constantly at play, in every moment. They make themselves known to us through feelings.

Feelings are, according to neuroscientist and author, Antonio Damasio, “mental experiences of body states”. He talks about certain feelings as “basic homeostatic feelings”, in that they help to regulate the stability of our internal milieu. Homeostasis, as he talks about it, is a two-sided process. One side is the automatic unconscious physiological side, where the heart goes on beating, etc. but the other side is conscious. It is conscious by means of these basic feelings. These feeling can include hunger, thirst, malaise, wellbeing, pleasure and certain types of pain. These are feeling that can become known to us.

He makes a point not to confuse feelings with emotion. Feelings are the mental experience, the awareness of what you feel. Emotions are, as implied by it’s name, all about motion. There is a stirring in the body, you can see the anger on someone’s face, or the joy in a smile. Feelings may also cause stirrings within the body, but they are, by nature, more reflective. And they serve to keep us on track with “managing life”, or in other words homeostasis.

An interesting point that Damasio makes about homeostasis is that it is not only meant for survival, but also for flourishing.

He says , “life is regulated within a range that is not just compatible with survival but also conducive to flourishing, to a projection of life into the future of an organism or a species”.

Taurus is this fascinating mystery of homeostasis. The management of life that happens from within an internal mileu in a relationship of constant response and action to it’s world in which it lives.

This past week, television all over the US displayed shocking video of violent disregard for our own nation’s right to stability. Stability not just understood as surviving but a chance to flourish as well. Such flourishing can only occur by listening to the promptings of our moral understandings. Understandings, as Damasio suggests,. are deeply embedded in our very physiology. In our internal mileu. Where we respond to our world, in each and every magic moment.

Mars went into Taurus on January 6th, after 7 long months in Aries. It will move into Gemini on March 3rd.

The Value of Existence and the Existence of Value:  Uranus in Taurus

It’s an interesting time both above and below.  Three slow moving planets are in their natural signs: Jupiter in Sagittarius, Neptune in Pisces and Saturn in Capricorn.

Jupiter is Sagittarius hails in a new thirst for meaning.

download.jpg
Give me more meaning!  I need fuel to move forward!!

Neptune in Pisces gleams a hint at divinity here on earth in the day to day.

download-1.jpg
The All in the Many, the divine in the day to day.

And Saturn in Capricorn says “If it isn’t useful, what good is it?”.

images.png
Let’s get pragmatic, yo!

All of these planets in their homegrown signs-  the mythic actors speaking “on the nose” (no subtext).  The grand plot with metaphors that children can grasp.

Uranus is the Great Awakener.  When it touches a sign, the revelation that comes about may be an: “Oh…OH… yes of course” type of thing.  You view something from a fresh angle, and all at once it becomes something NEW.

images-1.png
For the next 7 years, the awakening has everything to do with Taurus- our VALUES.

images-1.jpg
Basic assumptions come into question with Uranus.

Uranus is the planet that deals with the concept of Existence.  Philosophers have been exploring this concept for ages.  The mid 50s brought about Existentialism, a philosophy entirely devoted to what it means to exist.

download.png

Life and Existence seem to be the same thing at first glance- but they certainly are not.  For instance how could T.S. Eliot’s phrase “Where is the Life we have lost in living?” make sense?  And it does seem to make a whole lot of sense.

Enter a new literary voice in my life: Colin Wilson, a man who deems himself an Existentialist, yet with a much more cheery outlook than most of his contemporaries.  In fact he calls his Existentialism a “New Existentialism”, one that acknowledges a need for objective meaning in life.  Meaning to fuel our Will, and find purpose.

download-2.jpg
Colin Wilson became famous overnight when his first book, “The Outsider” was published in 1956.  He went on to write over 150 books, all the while contemplating and crafting an incredible life philosophy that celebrates optimism.

819pwDNdNBL.jpg
The Outsider is a non-fiction book exploring a character who isn’t sucked into the values of the world around him, such as creature comforts and career status.  Therefore he is an Outsider.  “He sees too much and too deep”.  He explores the writings of famous Outsiders such as Nietzsche, Dostoevsky, Hemingway and many others.  He sees the Outsider as a kind of “evolutionary throw-forward”.  Very Uranian.

Here is a fantastic interview with Wilson from the 80s television show, “Thinking Allowed with Jeffrey Mishlove”.

Uranus speaks to existence and Taurus speaks to values.  Both of these concepts are very worthy of contemplation (or meditation if that is your preferred way!)

What is the value of your existence?

Hard to pinpoint as you sit here and read this I bet.

But what if the situation were a bit more.. terrifying?

download-6.jpg
You might feel the value of your existence pounding in your throat.

And it is likely that, once the bear decided you weren’t worth the trouble and receded into the distance, your world may appear brighter.  More beautiful.  More dear.

the-beautiful-mountain-scenery-of-mount-shuksan-in-washington-state-photo-by-joann-zheng--37765.jpg
LIFE!!!!!  The WORLD!!!!

Wilson says that crisis (like the bear) has a way of lowering one’s “indifference threshold”, and thereby revealing all of the beauty and meaning that surrounds us.

This meaning is vital to our well-being as it fuels our will (no small thing!).

And now what about the reverse: what is the existence of value?

What are the values that exist in the world around you?

gallery-1485384513-family-with-breakfast-and-laptop-in-morning-kitchen.jpg
Voila The Joneses!

London-Commuters-Face-Strike-Action-Travel-Disruption.jpg
And the rat race.

download-8.jpg
And the latest iphone.

So these are some values that exist in the world, but here is the question: do they accurately reflect your values?

In some ways maybe they do.  But odds are if you have been reading this astrology post all the way up until this point there are other values that might not be so reflected here.

Again let’s look to the current sky (and simultaneously within ourselves):

download-9.jpg
Jupiter in Sagittarius:  the value of MEANING as suggested here by Michelangelo’s The David.  (Meaning=food for the will!)

download.jpg
Neptune in Pisces: the value of magical BEAUTY as displayed by Van Gogh’s Starry Night.

pexels-photo-210182.jpg
Saturn in Capricorn: finding these values in the here and now of REALITY.

With that, enjoy your cup of Uranian java and nurture the instinct to WAKE UP to new VALUES!

Happy Astro Pondering.
