The Spell of Animism. Full Moon Eclipse in Taurus

Metaphorcast 11/15-21, 2021

If the season of the witch has yet to cast its spell on you, this week’s Full Moon Eclipse in earth-magic Taurus might just do the trick. The longest lasting partial eclipse of the century will captivate its audience in the predawn hours of Friday, November 19th. The earth’s shadow will slowly cast over the Moon for a duration of nearly 3 and half hours, with its peak coverage around 4am Eastern Time. The cast of this shadow will likely display a deep red hue and be visible across the Americas, much of Asia, parts of Europe and West Africa.

If you happen to sleep through this wondrous event, let’s hope that your dreams may connect with this widespread magic. There is another kind of sleep however, non-rejuvenating and devoid of dreams. This sleep is one to be wary of. It is the ‘sleep of the senses’ that the Earth spirit warns Faust about. It is a closing off to the expressiveness of the natural world.

In his book, “The Spell of the Sensuous”, David Abram describes the human experience of magic as “our ancestral animistic awareness of the world as alive and expressive.” He says that everything ‘speaks’, and it is only through our creation of the written word that ‘the stones fall silent.’ What once was some grooves on a rock expressing meaning to us has become a paragraph in the New York Times. The alphabet and the written word is entirely human-constructed, not even the spirit of breath shapes it, the way the spoken word does. Far from saying that the written word is ‘bad’ he simply emphasizes what the written word really is: magic. This is why one can ‘cast a spell’ and ‘spell a word’. He says, “As non-human animals, plants, and even ‘inanimate’ rivers once spoke to our oral ancestors, so the ostensibly ‘inert’ letters o n the page now speak to us! This is a form of animism that we take for granted, but it is animism nonetheless- as mysterious as a talking stone.”

Even if you sleep through the Full Moon eclipse, be sure to rouse your senses enough to realize something important; the world is magical and we have the capacity to be magicians!

As always, happy astro pondering!

For more on David Abram, here is a wonderful interview where he talks about animism, magic and the senses.

Venus in Capricorn- The World as a Whole

This past week Venus entered Capricorn, the sign of the real world. Capricorn is the mythical SeaGoat. We can find a goat in the world and we can find a fish in the world, but we can’t find a SeaGoat in the real world.

Or can we?

Perhaps what is necessary is to examine what is meant by a real world.

In his book, Leisure as the Basis of Culture, Josef Pieper says that a world is a “field of relations”. To have a world is to “be the center, the coordinator, of a field of relations”. He gives the example of a plant using its surroundings; absorbing the air, the sunshine, and drawing nourishment from the ground. `

If the world is defined by our relations, of our inner life to our outer life, then a human’s world would include all the many relations of the mind and heart. The world becomes deeper and wider.

Imagination, philosophy, dreaming, these are the things that extend the boundaries of our world into the reality of wholeness. This, as Pieper saw it, is the real world. The world as a whole. For us to be at peace with ourselves, we must not mistake our environment with the real world of wholeness.

"The really human thing is to see the stars above the roof, to preserve our apprehension of the universality of things in the midst of the habits of our daily life, and to see "the world" above and beyond our immediate environment." Joseph Pieper- Leisure The Basis of Culture

For the rest of this month, as Venus moves through the Capricorn, don’t forget to see those stars amidst your daily habits.

Venus will move into Aquarius on February 1st.

As always, happy astro pondering!

Virgo Wisdom from Virgoan People

In celebration of Virgo Season, it couldn’t hurt to hear a few words from those who were born under strong influence of the Virgin.

leonard-cohen-quotes-2
Leonard Cohen’s Virgo Sun sits right on the Ascendant.  His Venus also in Virgo melds with Neptune in the ethereal 12th house.  Humility of character, and a willingness to be thorough is quintessential Virgoan wisdom.

D.H. Lawrence’s Virgo Sun conjuncts Jupiter, the planet of philosophy and overall pattern-seeing.  His words here clue us into the wisdom of selectivity, a Virgo virtue.

Ingrid Bergman has her Sun, Venus and Mercury in Virgo, with Leo Rising.  Virgo’s capacity to completely identify herself with her chosen skill is represented by her statement above.  Leo Rising would likely find much satisfaction in the skill of acting.

Richard Gere’s Virgo Sun conjuncts Saturn, the planet of commitment.  His words here show the power of Virgo being made of mutable earth.  Tangible, actual change is available to anyone who chooses to seek it.  The Virgin is always in a state of self-refinement.

Joan Jett’s Sun is saturated in the late degrees of Virgo.  Her words show a clear stamp of the Virgin’s delight in identifying whole-heartedly with her chosen craft.

Murder mystery Queen Agatha Christie’s Sun sits bright in her first house, along with Saturn and a Virgo Ascendant.  She is dedicated (Saturn) to a simple and practical Virgoan approach of method and logic to make things happen for her.

Do you have Virgo planets in you chart?  Even if you don’t, this sign falls somewhere in your natal chart, and that somewhere is current path of the Sun.  Let the Virgin inspire and guide you this season.  You’re bound to encounter some humble, helpful, powerful new knowledge.

Happy Virgo Season!

Here comes the Sun: Knowing your life energy. Part 1- Earth.

Your Sun sign keys you into understanding the fundamental energy that you run on.  There are four basic different categories of this energy: Earth, Water, Air and Fire.  Start with understanding your element and then move on to understand it’s specific qualities within your sign.

Today we take a quick look at Earth energy.

Earth energy is practical and sensual.  It is naturally tuned into solid reality.  It is also more body conscious.  With Earth energy comes a likely ability to stay grounded in the face of chaos.  There is often a need to make things manifest on a physical level.  Like Water, Earth is Yin, so there is a natural inwardness to it.

Earth is physical, tangible, and everywhere we look.

Breaking the Earth signs further down into their modes we get:

Cardinal Earth: Capricorn.  Cardinal INITIATES.  Think of the above description of Earth energy and add the concept of INITIATION to better understand Capricorn.

I will give examples with some “doubles” below (Sun and Moon in same sign).  Doubles are fun to study because the archetype of the sign is often made more visible.

Double Capricorn James Earl Jones has both these planets in the first and Saturn on the ASC (Saturn is the planet associated with Capricorn). His identity (first) is composed of authoritative, self composed energy (Capricorn).

Fixed Earth: Taurus.  Fixed signs MAINTAIN.  With Earth energy now add the concept of MAINTAINING to better understand Taurus.

Sex-kitten dancer/actress, Ann Margaret has everything in sensual, body oriented Taurus and in the 12th. She seeks an ideal (12th) in celebrating her body and her physicality (Taurus)

Mutable Earth: Virgo.  Mutable signs ADAPT, CHANGE and REFINE.  Add these concepts to Earth energy to better understand Virgo.

Unknown
Like Jones, Sean Connery also has Saturn on the ASC (authoritative identity) but his Sun and Moon are in Virgo and in the 8th. He has been very valued by others (8th) in playing the most iconic of all the James Bonds with his appealing and unassuming (Virgo) style that embraces neatness and precision (Virgo)

In the next post we will explore the Sun signs that run on Water energy.
