Venus in Capricorn- The World as a Whole

This past week Venus entered Capricorn, the sign of the real world. Capricorn is the mythical SeaGoat. We can find a goat in the world and we can find a fish in the world, but we can’t find a SeaGoat in the real world.

Or can we?

Perhaps what is necessary is to examine what is meant by a real world.

In his book, Leisure as the Basis of Culture, Josef Pieper says that a world is a “field of relations”. To have a world is to “be the center, the coordinator, of a field of relations”. He gives the example of a plant using its surroundings; absorbing the air, the sunshine, and drawing nourishment from the ground. `

If the world is defined by our relations, of our inner life to our outer life, then a human’s world would include all the many relations of the mind and heart. The world becomes deeper and wider.

Imagination, philosophy, dreaming, these are the things that extend the boundaries of our world into the reality of wholeness. This, as Pieper saw it, is the real world. The world as a whole. For us to be at peace with ourselves, we must not mistake our environment with the real world of wholeness.

"The really human thing is to see the stars above the roof, to preserve our apprehension of the universality of things in the midst of the habits of our daily life, and to see "the world" above and beyond our immediate environment." Joseph Pieper- Leisure The Basis of Culture

For the rest of this month, as Venus moves through the Capricorn, don’t forget to see those stars amidst your daily habits.

Venus will move into Aquarius on February 1st.

As always, happy astro pondering!

The Future of Value. Uranus Moves Direct

The planet of future moves forward today in Taurus, the sign of value, after having been retrograde since mid August.

Uranus has been called the Great Awakener.  These awakenings are born from a kind of shaking, a moving, a turbulence, or perhaps a strange moment of wonder that renders us back to a freshness as a beginner.

The past year has shook the entire globe up into a collective new reality.  The question is, from such a change, what is the future of value itself?

Is there a future where wellbeing is deemed more valuable than money?  What would such a future look like?  John Lennon painted such a future, from his imagination outward.  When he said he was not the only dreamer, he understood full well the joy of the beginner.  Embracing what is fresh, and yet to be.

Uranus is the planet of future because it is the essence of yet to be.  In Taurus we tie in an element of goodness.  Taurus is the kinds of response we prefer to hold on to, to constitute ourselves, to be secure and strong.  Be it food, thought, relations, environment, tradition, habit, what have you.  Taurus uses whatever it can to continue to constitute itself and make itself strong.

The future lives in every moment, as we are free to shake off the imposing qualities of the immediate past (as philosopher Alfred North Whitehead talks about) and create something new with a “bid for freedom”.  In this way, we step into the realm of yet to be instead of sinking into the swamp of that’s just the way it is.

As the future gains its forward stride, cultivate moments of well-being, that inform you from the inside the true meaning of value.  Lightning visions of intuition may find you in such moments, illuminating this question even more, then gone in a flash, yet hopefully rediscovered through… pondering!

As always, happy astro pondering!

Uranus won’t retrograde again until August 2022, and will be in Taurus until April 2026.

Mars into Taurus- the Will to Stabilize

In the light of recent events, this title’s concept will likely be quickly felt. Felt in the right spot too. That is the mysterious space of the internal mileu, where good and bad are physiologically known.

It is through the avoiding of what’s bad, and the seeking and assimilating of what’s good that keeps us in a state of homeostasis. Just imagine what would happen if we always ignored that good drink of water when we were thirsty, or took no precaution to step out of the way of that bad oncoming city bus.

These value judgments are constantly at play, in every moment. They make themselves known to us through feelings.

Feelings are, according to neuroscientist and author, Antonio Damasio, “mental experiences of body states”. He talks about certain feelings as “basic homeostatic feelings”, in that they help to regulate the stability of our internal milieu. Homeostasis, as he talks about it, is a two-sided process. One side is the automatic unconscious physiological side, where the heart goes on beating, etc. but the other side is conscious. It is conscious by means of these basic feelings. These feeling can include hunger, thirst, malaise, wellbeing, pleasure and certain types of pain. These are feeling that can become known to us.

He makes a point not to confuse feelings with emotion. Feelings are the mental experience, the awareness of what you feel. Emotions are, as implied by it’s name, all about motion. There is a stirring in the body, you can see the anger on someone’s face, or the joy in a smile. Feelings may also cause stirrings within the body, but they are, by nature, more reflective. And they serve to keep us on track with “managing life”, or in other words homeostasis.

An interesting point that Damasio makes about homeostasis is that it is not only meant for survival, but also for flourishing.

He says , “life is regulated within a range that is not just compatible with survival but also conducive to flourishing, to a projection of life into the future of an organism or a species”.

Taurus is this fascinating mystery of homeostasis. The management of life that happens from within an internal mileu in a relationship of constant response and action to it’s world in which it lives.

This past week, television all over the US displayed shocking video of violent disregard for our own nation’s right to stability. Stability not just understood as surviving but a chance to flourish as well. Such flourishing can only occur by listening to the promptings of our moral understandings. Understandings, as Damasio suggests,. are deeply embedded in our very physiology. In our internal mileu. Where we respond to our world, in each and every magic moment.

Mars went into Taurus on January 6th, after 7 long months in Aries. It will move into Gemini on March 3rd.

Hindsight and Foresight, A Full Moon on a Cold Night!

Metaphorcast 12/28/20- 1/3/21

The Mohawk Native Americans would call this week’s Full Cancer Moon, the Full Cold Moon, falling in the cold month of December.  A New Year will find us before the weekend, allowing for the phrase Hindsight is 2020 to not only be a viral meme, but also a re-wakened dream.  If myth’s are indeed, as Joseph Campbell said, public dreams (as opposed to dreams being private myths) there is indeed a pertinent myth to reflect as the new twenties gain their stride.  That is the myth of Prometheus and Epimetheus.  Foresight and Hindsight.

It was both Prometheus and his brother Epimetheus who sculpted all living creatures with clay.  Epimetheus sculpted the various animals and beasts, with their horns, scales, wings, feathers, teeth and fur.  But it was Prometheus that sculpted the humans last.  He had no special gift to give them, as Epimetheus had already given these specialties to the animals, so Prometheus decided to make human beings walk upright like the Gods, and he gave them fire.

Epimetheus, in hindsight, can see the deep seated desire of the tiger, with his sharp teeth and powerful reflexes.  In hindsight he can see the spacial craving of the bird, with it’s delicate and aeordynamic wing.  He can see the swamp king’s alpha dream in the crocodiles scales teeth and giant jaw.  But what of the human?

Prometheus made the human, not in hindsight, but in foresight.  The human, with no horn, wing, or giant jaw, no beak or fur or retratctable claw, no antlers, scales or stinging tails, nothing special here to see, except that speical quality, of vision and fire, from eyes heart and mind, we can be in two different places at the same time.

The past and the future, who’s dividing line is so slight, it makes each tiny moment it’s own fire to ignite.

As Albert Camus said, “With rebellion, awareness is born.”

Tuesday night we will see the Cold Moon, December’s Full Moon, in Cancer during this Capricorn Season.  A Cancer Full Moon is the Moon at it’s Moonest.  Whatever the Moon does for you, it does it more on the Cold Moon, the Full Cancer Moon, in this start of the Winter Season.

To have foresight is also to have hindsight. To grasp a future is to understand it’s roots.  In the Cold Moonlight of the Ocean of Memory, that forms an endless chain back to the place of myths themselves, can you feel your reality in it’s full mythic sense? Your own private myth of dreams, and your resonance to certain public dreams of myth? What would an Epimethean set of glasses tell you about yourself.  And when Prometheus hands you that burning fennel stalk, in which way would you point it?  What would you hope to illuminate?

As the Cold Moon begins to wane, it will still be bright and beautiful, weather permitting for New Years Eve, in the sign of Leo, the quintessential party animal.  Though parties will be at a minimum this year, the Leo Moon lights any stage with a healthy dose of drama.  A realistic re-rendering of any setting, living room, hallway, sidewalk, kitchen, as the stage that dramatically swaps out an old year for a new one.

The newfound Aquarian energy in the sky, with the conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn, is a giant twinkly wink from Prometheus and his gift of foresight.

Foresight can make way for important paradigm shifts, like the one that happened in the 16th century, when the Ptolemic Earth-centered model of the universe was replace by the Copernican Sun-centered one.

There is a very interesting article written by astrophysicist Peter D Usher that sees Shakespeare’s Hamlet as a dramatization of this paradigm shift. Hamlet symbolizes the awakening to a new infinite and Sun-centered universe. He is ultimately responsible for the death of the old king, Claudius, who shares Ptolemy’s first name.

Portrait of an Astronomer (Nicolaus Copernicus?) Marco Basaiti
Date 1512 (funny that he also looks like Shakespeare!)

The sky during this time in history shared a key characteristic as it does now, as Jupiter and Saturn go into what’s known as a “grand mutation”, shifting from 200 years of Earth conjunctions to a new 200 years of Air conjunctions. These Jupiter Saturn conjunctions are known as trigons. The full trigon cycle is 800 years, as it passes through each of the four elements.

In Shakespeare’s time the shift was from Water to Fire, and the fire of the Sun indeed became the new center.

Now it is from Earth to Air, as the Aquarian Age truly begins.

Hindight may be 2020, but that’s old news.  Another year over and a new one just begun.  Will we see another paradigm shift in 2021?

Happy New Year all the same!

And Happy Astro Pondering!

Jupiter Saturn Great Conjunction 2020!

The week begins with a lively event, as the Winter Solstice will present, the shortest day and the longest night; look to the sky for a fantastic sight.  For Jupiter and Saturn will align, and form a shining star so divine, and while this occurence happens every 20 years, they have not been this close since the days of Shakespeare!  And even then it’s predicted to have not been well-seen, for that we are looking at the early 13th century!

Needless to say, take advantage of the extra evening darkness tonight.  Look just above the Southwestern or Western horizon after sunset.

Saturn, the planet of tangible reality, fused together with Jupiter, the planet of far-reaching possibility.

What does it mean for these two planets to unite, on this special first day of Winter, when the Sun enters Capricorn, the sign of reality.

Is there a place, where reality and possibity unite, to form a different type of reality?

Maybe.

German physicist Werner Heisenberg was born under a Jupiter Saturn conjunction.  Known for publishing the Uncertainty Principle in 1927, he made staggering discoveries in the strange quantum world of potenitalities and possibilities.  He discovered a strange physical world, a probability wave that lived between reality and possibility.

He said, “Revere these things beyond science which really matter and about which it is difficult to speak.”

Born on the same exact day as Heisenberg was another reality-possibilist, Walt Disney.  He famously said “Fantasy and Reality often overlap” and maintained that his films were made for the child in everyone.  He spoke to children matter of factly because he saw that they were “always reaching”.  He also saw children to be “born blessed with vivid imaginations”, and he admitted that he resented the limitations of his own imagination.

The Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle speaks of a certain fuzziness to reality.  It states that the position and the velocity of an object cannot both be measured exactly at the same time, even in theory.

It’s like knowing that your car is at this exact location, and having no idea what speed you are going, or vice versa.

A strange world where reality meets possibility, shining symbolically in the sky on this darkest night.  As a New Year approaches and an old and challenging one comes to an end, what a good time it is, to get cozy with uncertainty itself!

It is uncertainty that brings about expectation, and investigation.  Lively things, alive with a sense of future.  Things that keep us reaching, and re-vivify our imagination! This Great Star in the sky, a glimmer of the Aquarian age, as both of these planets just went into Aquarius last week, the sign of future and innovation.

While certainty may seem to quell stress and fear, uncertainty, with it’s dynamism, is a reason to cheer.  As psychologist Erich Fromm said, “The quest for certainty blocks the search for meaning.  Uncertainty is the very condition to impel man to unfold his powers.”

Mercury is now in Capricorn, along with the Sun- perception is sharp- tuned in.  Perfect for beholding that briiliant night star.

Venus is in Sagittarius- celebrating the enthusiastic love of knowlege, which historian and mathematician, Jacob Bronowski saw as “an unending adventure at the edge of uncertainty.”

Mars moving onward in Aries- the most daring of planetary signatures.  Oh where would we be without the ability to dare.  Walt Disney said he like to dream, then test his dreams against his beliefs, then dare to see them through.

There it is again- that strange world- alive between reality and possibility.

Uranus in Taurus, the body electric, supporting by trine aspect the energy of the Sun and Mercury.  See the star and be the star.  The merging of the near and the far!

Neptune in Pisces – dreaming before daring

The Moon

The Moon will begin the week in Pisces, the sign of imagination and fuzziness.  Get cozy with that fuzzy aspect of reality, and let your imagination seek out peritinent avenues that slowly come into focus.

By early evening Monday, as we begin to look for that brilliant night Star, the Moon will wax into Aries, and the atmosphere comes alive with anticipation.  Though you will be able to enjoy the beauty of this “star” for the whole week, tonight when these two planets are the closest.  Its the Winter Solstice, with drama at it’s mostest!

The Aries Moon will continue through Tuesday and Wednesday- make room to dare, and do it with flair.

By Thursday, Christmas Eve, we have a larger Taurus Moon, the sign associated with nature.  Now that we have meditated on nature’s fuzzy little secret, pour some eggnog and turn the fire on the TV- these warm fuzzies are like wormholes to that world between worlds.  Where possibility and reality snuggle.  Where possibilities glisten, and reality listens.

Enjoy this Big and Fuzzy Moon for Christmas night as well, after the cookies and mistetoes have cast their spells.  Hold close the things certain, like the warmth of love, and give tidings to uncertainty that twinkles from above.

By evening on Saturday the Moon grows quite large in Gemini, the sign of facts.  Like little pixels that continue to accumlate, and make our world a knowable place, less fuzzy.  The last timet the Great Conjunction Star was this visible was when religion held the answers, whereas now it is science.

Heisenberg always held a strong curiousity towards where these two worlds might unite. He said, “The first gulp from the glass of natural sciences will turn you into an atheist, but at the bottom of the glass God is waiting for you.”

If there is a world between reality and possibility, where waves behave in the most mysterious ways, and sharpness bottoms out into more of a blur, this is surely the realm where blood starts to stir.

Enjoy this chrystaline first week of Winter, in all of its uncertainty.

as always, happy astro pondering!

Metaphorcast 12/14-20, 2020

What a week we have in store, with a Solar Eclipse and so much more.  The New Moon Sagittarius Solar Eclipse kicks of the beginning of the week with a burst of spirited horsepower.  For the people in Chile it will really be a treat- as the Full light of the Sun will it’s opposite meet, in the darkness of daylight the insects will pause their applause, the  temperature drops along with thousands of jaws.  Parts of Argentina will see this as well, but alas, not here in the NorthEast of the U.S.

Yet even though en masse, our heads won’t be up, this event invites us to still get revved up, and feel united in a moment when time seems to disengage-  Silent and in sight of, a brilliant New Age.

As Existentialist writer and philosopher, Rollo May said, “Human freedom involves our capacity to pause, to choose the one response toward which we wish to throw our weight.”

Saturn, the old SeaGoat of Time and Order, is at last committing to it’s forward journey into Aquarius on Thursday, the 17th. Back in late March, Saturn tested these strange Aquarian waters, but retrograded back into Capricorn by the beginning of July.  This time, he advances with out looking back, and to make matters ever the more exciting, he will be joined by our Seasonal spirited horse, Jupiter, who will as well move into Aquarius on Saturday, the 19th.  Saturn will continue in Aquarius until 2023, and Jupiter, until the end of next year.  By the year 2023, big and powerful Pluto will step into this future as well, and be in the sign of Man until the year 2043.

It could be said, quite naturally, that the Aquarian Age is officially here.  Aquarius, the sign of Freedom, Future, Evolution and Awareness.  The Age of Aquarius is the age in which we become dynamically aware of our own Evolution.

Freedom, and the capacity to pause to choose a worthy response.  A great cause for a pause.

As Mark Twain said, “the right word may be effective; but no word was ever as effective as a rightly timed pause.”

A worthy response reflects your true values. Little bells that ring like wind chimes inside and integrate a strong resonance of self.  To become aware of our evolution is to become aware of the truly important values, for one and for all.  A global wind chime with a resonance so strong, it is sensed in the present as a place we belong.

The future lives strong in the open space of a pause.

Speaking of open spaces, we are in the last week of Sagittarius, the sign of the horse, who’s affinity for open spaces is surpassed by none.  The heart of the Sun and the mind of Mercury are already galavanting in the open green, and they will be joined on Tuesday by the gorgeous goddess of love.  She charges forth with spirit, inspired by the previous day’s New Moon Eclipse.

The Goddess of Love knows all about the pause, as others might call it a rest.  It is her sacred space, her negatively charged grace, like a waterfall under a Full Moon, or the aftermath of a rainy afternoon- she will applause the pause as one of nature’s best laws.

Mars deep in Aries, standing tall like Michelangelo’s The David, demonstrating courage in a most powerful and mature way as he comes into square with Pluto in Capricorn.  His power coming from a  sense of readiness.  A mature and powerful readiness, to choose the right response to which he throws his weight.

Uranus in Taurus- Conscious evolution strengthening the all in tandem with strengthening the self- as Teilhard de Chardin wrote, “No evolutionary future awaits man except in association with all other men.”

Neptune in Pisces- Imagine all the people living for today

The Moon

After the phenomenon of Mondays New Moon Eclipse, she will grow with sturdiness, as into Capricorn she slips.  Tuesday and Wednesday will be excellent times, to reel in your energies and hear those wind chimes.

Expect strong breezes on Thursday, as she grows in Aquarius, the same day that Saturn takes that bold first step into the reality of the Water Bearer.  We bearers of water, holding shape-shifts of responses, with awareness is birthed many new rennaisances! Celebrate the coming of a new age today, in the Season of the Horse, indulge in some full-hearted faith in the future.

The weekend welcomes a growing Pisces Moon and the atmosphere takes on a dreamy dimension, just in time for Jupiter’s entrance into Aquarius, where optimism meets the reality of future.  Mercury will also be conjunct the Sun, integrating the life of the mind with the centrality of the heart.   Limitless mind and centering heart, both which operate on through the powers of connection.  To value these powers is to know our direction.

In the wake of this week’s New Moon Solar Eclipse,

when into obscurity, the Sun itself slips,

And people react with their oohs and ahs

Remember the revolution

Of a well placed

Pause.

As Always, happy astro pondering!

Metaphorcast 12/7-13, 2020

Wings are things for bugs bats and birds, but they are also for hearts, souls, minds and words! Wings have always been waiting in the wings, so to speak, persuading our senses to hunger for peaks.  Peaks of experience, when all is affirmed, lucid mountain-top-moments where true wealth is learned.

William Blake famously said, “No bird soars too high if he soars with his own wings.”

With Sagittarius’ totem planet in Capricorn, the sign of authenticity, and conjunct Saturn, the author of authenticity itself, there is extra attention to the authentic integrity of these wings.  Pluto has been nearby as well for quite some time, as a stirring of kundalini enlivens these wings. And don’t tell me that you have no wings, I’ll just refer you straight to Muhammad Ali who said, “The man who has no imagination has no wings.”

What are these wings of yours that vibrate to such a particular voice, and animates a world of choice, appealing to those higher ceilings, and cheering on those freeing feelings.

Peter Pan and Mary Poppins seem to agree that the secret of flight lies in the heart’s delight.

What are these wings, and what song must they sing?  What heights of true home claim these wings as our own?  As the artist William Holman Hunt said, “The door of he human heart, can only be opened from the inside.”

Mercury, with winged sandals and winged helmet, flies in the upward nitrogen-rich air of Sagittarius.  Approaching a square with Neptune the God of the Sea, he expands his zest for higher ceilings, to incorporate delicacies of ephemeral feelings. Perception is gleaming with the phenomena of sun mixed with sea.  Rimbaud’s sense of eternity.

Venus in Scorpio, in a dramatic state, awakening like she did when she first met the snake.  Have her senses been dormant?  Has her pleasure been sleeping?  Higher ceilings in question, fuller senses are creeping, upward as pre-flowering roots.

At the hub of this spirit to fly and soar, travels Mars in Aries, as the Will gets restored.  The precious Will, with such high determination.  Awakened senses and commitment to creation.

Uranus in Taurus- waking up a natural instinct, of flight through delight.

Neptune in Pisces, in dreams we reunite with our wings- but only with some deliberate intent.

The Moon

The Moon begins the week waning into it’s 4th quarter in Virgo, the simple maiden of leisure and cultivation.  In practical-Moon-fashion, she nudges us towards new habits, that favor these Sagittarian instincts.  With a nurturing humm, she cultivates the treasures that put horse power in our soul;  Laughter, anticipation, elevation, and the appetite for learning.

By mid-evening on Tuesday, she continues to wane now into Libra, and there is at last air in the sky.  The air of what’s fair, in both sense of the word.  The balance and also the beauty of a bird.

The Sun, near perceptive Mercury, comes into an exact square with Neptune Wednesday.  Look a moment longer in any place that glimmers, feel in your heart a true signature of shimmer.

By later evening Thursday, a Scorpio Moon continues to slighten- and an earth magic is heightened.  The next day the Sun goes into trine with Mars, carpe that diem for it truly is ours.  Just like those vital things that give life to our wings- Be wakeful today, in the Warrior’s way.

The Scorpio Moon grins slimmer through Saturday.  Slighter still by evening, as into Sagittarius it slips- to be New on Monday for a Full Solar Eclipse!

Unless you are in South America you won’t see it- but nonetheless- quite an event is headed our way!  A mystifying sky, prompting that question of why?  An upcoming wonder, who’s skies we stand under.

A staggering phenomenon to behold, seemingly unreal, yet governed by natural laws.  Writer philosopher, Colin Wilson believed that peak experiences are also governed by natural laws.  Laws that govern the structure of our consciousness.  Are positive responses more intentional than negative ones?  Can an active and purposive state of mind help you, in Wilson’s words, “sense the magnetic north of [your] existence”?

In the Season of the horse, this is the course.  An altitude of attitude aiming straight for the source.  Lucid-mountain-top moments, when all is affirmed, to be honored in memory as true wealth that’s been learned.

As always, happy astro pondering!

Metaphorcast 11/30-12/6, 2020

A Full Moon eclipse crowns the last day of November, dazzling in Gemini before the start of December.

Gemini sparkles with reflection of thought. The flint of the fire, and all we’ve been taught.  Sparkling and glittering for centuries back- sensing a freedom and enlarging the crack, so more creativity can leak in, and keep us on track.

The archer pulls back the string of his bow.  The arrow in flight shows the way life likes to grow.

From his book, The Phenomenon of Man, Teilhard de Chardin says this of Man’s true place in evolution: “Man is not the center of the universe as we once thought in our simplicity, but something much more wonderful- the arrow pointing the way to the final unification of the world in terms of life.  Man alone constitutes the last-born, the freshest, the most complicated, the most subtle of all the successive layers of life.”

Sagittarius, the Season we are in right now, is that very arrow.  The life of life itself, and it’s direction of growth.

With love, the future sets us free!  The distant future, and the one of immediacy.  In a world where nothing is static- the question does become, in which direction are you moving, and from where have you come?  This is a question that can be asked at any given moment.

Sagittarius Season is bubbling with an effervescense, spreading with delightful incandescense, to remind us of our truest essence.  Outward on streets, lights spring up as expected, inward a fire glows warm with direction.

Mercury will be in the deepest degrees of Scorpio on Monday, for the Gemini Full Moon eclipse.  Gemini rules the hands.  Teilhard de Chardin says that our arms became free, so we could hold our hands to our face, with narrower eyes, we could percieve what we hold in front of us- and thus, reflective thought was born.  He says “Man came silently into this world”.

The next day, as December begins, the trickster goes into Sagittarius, with a growing confidence.  The trickster realizes he holds the keys, his hands are free, like the sky and the sea.

Venus, the love goddess stirs in Scorpio.  She overhears the trickster’s epiphany, and creates a stormy, passionate symphony.  Seeing her gifts of art and love, as the fire that holds everything together from above.  She breathes in the sweetness of a vibrant red rose, from her delicate hands, the whole world she does hold.

Mars moving onward in Aries in an epic voyage that’s lasted half a year!  His lovers tune seducing his soul, freeing his vibrations to a place that is bold.  As Robert Frost said, “Freedom lies in being bold.”

Jupiter moving away from Pluto and into a tighter conjunction with Saturn, in Capricorn, in tension with Aries’ fire.  The strategy of caution serving hope in a most noble of ways.  We’ve learned so much in these past few hundred days.

Uranus in Taurus- the evolution of nature, becoming more natural, to reflect on

Neptune in Pisces- the dream in the Seasonal archer’s heart- As Ralph Waldo Emerson said “we aim above the mark to hit the mark.”

The Moon

The Moon as mentioned will be Full in Gemini at the beginning of the week, the sign of the hands, Aristotle’s “tool of tools”.  Evidence of Sagittarian spirit shimmer in the stone carvings of the ancient world, at the skill of ancient hands.

Full Moons are nights of illumination.

As Langston Hughes said

“I look at my own body With eyes no longer blind-

And see that my own hands

can make

The world that’s in my mind.”

In the later hours of Tuesday night she wanes gibbous in Cancer, her true habitat of Moon.  Bears are beginnng to head to their caves, light is dwindling in the days.  In the flourescence of the Horse’s Season, a Cancer Moon is a perfect reason, to find some Hooga with dimmed down lights.  Store some power in the soul’s delight!

Friday, Saturday and most of Sunday host a Leo Moon, and the atmosphere is full of fire.  The fire of expression!  The radiant life of love.  In our upward flight that moves to the right, who can push aside this Eternal delight.  As Venus comes into trine with all encompassing Neptune, echoes of the Four Tops ring out into the ether- Reach out..

By Sunday afternoon, a Virgo Moon wanes on- in the spirit of learning, and the ever-in-motion weaving of the imagination with experience.

In which direction are you going, and where are you coming from?

Contemplate, on this Virgo Moon.

Remind yourself of just how great

is this ability to contemplate

to draw something close and then

set your eyes on the distance

to feel evolution at work

in your very existence!

As always, happy astro pondering!

Metaphorcast 11/23-29, 2020

Over the weekend we had a Seasonal shift, from Scorpio’s realm to Sagittarius’ lift.  What did we learn in the profound outerbounds, in the deep zone of our bones where truth hangs around?  What comes next?  After an encounter with such mystery?

French surrealist artist Yves Klein said, “At first there is nothing, then there is a profound nothingness, after that a blue profundity.”

At the age of 19 Klein and his two friends, the artist Arman and composer Claude Pascal, lay on a beach in Southern France.  They decided to divide the world between themselves.  Pascal chose words, Arman chose the Earth, and Klein chose the sky.

What ensued was a life-long obsession and devotion to the color blue.  Signing the sky with his hand, he committed to a quest to reach the far side of the infinite.  He saw that unlike other colors that arouse specific associative ideas, blue at most suggests the sea and sky, and thus is “beyond dimension.”

Sagittarius Season celebrates this sense of blue.  Beyond dimension.  A place to dream, and feel a full sense of vitality.  Though it’s true that November is known more for it’s falling temperature, the horse insists on acknowledging this place of blue space; this high of open sky.

Goethe, in his theory of colors, saw the blue sky to be the darkness of space, lit up by the presence of sunlight in our atmosphere.  The deep space of beyond lit up before our eyes, with each waking day under the blue of the skies.  But what of the deep space that exists from within, does it too become lightened,  a blue sky built-in?

An inner blue sky, lightened with optimism, hope and acknowledgment.  Beyond just a knowing, a showing of knowing.

You know the music is good, from the depths of the dark, but nodding your head acknowledges this spark.  That joke is funny says the depths of you, but laughing acknowledges this fact to be true!  Darkness made light, in the truth of the blue.  From knowledge to acknowledgment, a major breakthrough!

With Thanksgiving on thursday, acknowledgment will rise, with appreciation to those we have loved for so long.  The spirit of appreciation, the sweetest of songs. William James saw the craving of appreciation to be the deepest principle of human nature.  Be generous with it in this skyward Season.

The planets are short on air this week.  Social and connected air.  Holidays for most will be celebrated remote.  With both Mercury and Venus in Scorpio, communication and relating is not short on depth.  Over the phone or online, connection is primed, to make up for these distances of space and timezone, with a sense of belonging, Scorpio’s powerful lodestone.  And even if no socialization occurs, tune into a place, that makes your blood stir. Earth magic abounds from its depths and yours too, from a profound nothingness to the profundity of blue!

Venus will oppose the great awakener Uranus in the bountiful earth of Taurus.  William Blakes thankful receiver who “bears a plentiful harvest.”

Mars moving onward from the middle of Aries, no other direction better for such energy.  Must be the Season of the horse, with those wide open plains, the galvanized Will grips gladly the reigns!

Ready to check him are Jupiter, Pluto and Saturn, who continue in Capricorn a most hyper-real pattern.  Empowered hope and strong practicality, looming threats and good news in the same actuality.  As Robert Frost said, “the best way out is always through.”

Neptune in Pisces, the sea-chariot that navigates a blue inner-sky.

The Moon

The Moon begins the week waxing gibbous in the later degrees of Pisces.  Saturated with imaginative potential, be open to nuance, suggestion and subtlety- new roads of dreams are paved with discovery!

On Tuesday, original day of Mars, she will grow into Aries by mid morning.  In the Season of Blue skies, a redness bursts forth.  The connection of action to a home-base of hearth.  As Rainer Maria Rilke wrote, “All the soarings of my mind begin in my blood.”

This kindred fire of Moonlight grows through most of Thanksgiving day.  Big and bold this Aries Moon, singing in red a mysterious tune; of memory, family, belonging and desire.  Towards what does your wolf-like yearning aspire?  Joyce Carol Oates called the blood “memory without language.”

By Friday as Venus receives her strongest electric wave from Uranus, the Moon, moving into luxurious Taurus, wants in on the act.  A sensual relaxing yet altogether lively signature, much like the way Goethe described the color blue.  In his words, “This color has a peculiar and almost indescribable effect on the eye.  As a hue it is powerful- but it is on the negative side, and in its highest purity is, as it were, a stimulating negation.  Its appearance, then, is a kind of contradiction between excitement and repose.”

Perhaps it is this blue energy that prompts Neptune to finally station to move direct, on Saturday, after nearly 5 months of retrograde.  The stimulating negation, the effortless creation, of a dream.

By Sunday midday she waxes extremely gibbous in Gemini, and there is at last, air in the planetary line-up.  Perspective and ease of rationality, a lightness perhaps or just some good old fashioned fresh air.  She moves towards being not only a Full Moon, but a Full Moon Lunar Eclipse, in sparkling Gemini, the dance of the Twins.  This event will be exact the following Monday, at 4 am, so both nights will be excellent opportunities to view it.

As a Lunar Eclipse, the earth will be in between the Sagittarian Sun and the Gemini Moon, casting an earth Shadow, darkening the light, likely casting a coppery-red tone.  In the Season of lightened darkness, we have a darkened brightness.  The Twins laugh with delight.   Use the youthful energy of Gemini Moonbeams, to acknowledge possibilities that are yet to be seen.  Shine the light on just one and create something new.  And Gemini loves words, especially the ones that need to be heard.  Acknowledge another, with a kind-hearted word, it may kindle music from happiness’ blue bird.

From granted to gracious, life gets more spacious.

Yves Klein wrote his name on the sky, painting monochrome surfaces to see with his own eyes- an “absolute freedom”  (his words exact).  For the horse, it’s a wide open space that attracts.

Metaphorcast 11/16-22, 2020

Abe Lincoln said “Important principles may, and must, be inflexible.”

As thinking and social creatures, we are often reminded of the merits of a flexible mind.  It is good to be open minded, and curious about another viewpoint, and willing to learn from others as well as our mistakes.

Its good to be flexible in body- and grab a stretch where we can, take in some yoga or a brisk walk in the Autumn air.

But flexibility ceases to be of value when it comes to our principles.  For any progress to be made, principles are to be fixed upon a north star of truth.  As Henry Ward Beecher said “We cannot afford to build on the shifting sands.”

True to form, this Scorpio Season has been intense with passion.  The Seasonal planet Pluto has been in Capricorn since 2008, and will continue its voyage until 2024.  The profound realizations of Pluto has a generational impact, as a deep sense of knowing slowly grows.  Capricorn is the most inflexible sign of the zodiac.   The Sea Goat strives to secure our principles, and see them rooted in a real place of truth.  Principles must be strong just like our bones, like the ancient Pyramids made out of stone!

And its not enough just to know our principles.  As children of the Sun we must love them as well.  They must be built into our hearts, and give coherence to our lives. And this too isn’t enough, we must then go on to build these loving principles into the hearts of our children.  As FDR said, “We cannot always build the future for our youth but we can build our youth for the future.”

Within our fabulous inflexible bones there exists a strange and mysterious zone, where our very blood is born again new, in the depths of our bones, where we know what rings true. This is the space of Scorpio, oh what a season it’s been.  Come the weekend we’ll shift into a more spirited light, the blood becomes trained to be strong and fight.  In the Thymus, the Thumos, Plato’s spirited white horse; the energy of hope, a strong electrified force!

What truth became clear in this Scorpio Season.  Will it give spirit to Thumos in this New Horsey Season?

Those inflexible bones, the backbone of integrity.  A most welcoming wholeness and strong undividedness.  A spirited hopeful and thoughtful uprightedness.  In the Aquarian-age, the body part of the ankles truly comes into light.  Beyond an instinctive kick that found its way in the womb, the Aquarian-ruled ankles support us, when that early-life magic moment is right.  To take a chance, stand and walk upright.

The torch of the Sun will be passed from truth-seeking Scorpio into the lift off of Sagittarius’ strong fiery spirit come the weekend.  There two respective planets at last separating, as Jupiter moves onward away from Pluto.  Guided by profound and spirited connection to principle.  Moving on and up.

Mercury, the thinking planet, in the throws of Scorpio, and opposite the Great Awakener Uranus.  Seeing in the dark, yet with the Promethean light, of foresight and awareness.

Venus in the latest degrees of Libra, and receiving squares aspects from Pluto Jupiter and Saturn in Capricorn.  A sense of fairness and rest coming only with a clarification of principle.  As the poet Gwendolyn Brooks wrote “We are each other’s harvest; we are each other’s business; we are each other’s magnitude, and bond.”

By the Weekend, with that new Sagittarian Sun, she’ll rebirth into Scorpio, with a glow that will stun.

Mars at last stationed to move direct- after a two-month-long retrograde.  Forward movement coming slow sure and steady – authentic like gold, in a holding heart, the genius of bold and the instinct to start.

Neptune in Pisces, John Keat’s unheard melodies sweeter than those that are heard.

The Moon

The Moon begins the week growing eagerly in the later degrees of Sagittarius.  A preview of the incoming Season.  A mood that hardly needs a reason to feel that magical spark of hope.  When from the flint the spark is free, it takes on it’s horsey tendencies, to run wild with zest in a fire-blast of spirit- dashing in a distance so vast, can you hear it?

By Tuesday late morning she’s still young in first quarter, in Capricorn, those dear principles that give your life order! A time opportune to commune with this mood- William Wordsworth’s “Inward eye/ The bliss of solitude.”

By Thursday later afternoon she grows on in Aquarius- just to make sure that the last days of Scorpio are to the backdrop of a mood of Freedom-seeking.  Are any more foundations in need of a shaking?  Anything deep down inside still a-quaking?  Bob Dylan’s ghost of electricity howling in the bones of her face- let it revive and find a new open space!

With bold electricity the Aquarius Moon welcomes in the new Sagittarian Sun King on Saturday late afternoon.  Zeus abounds with lighting bolt in hand, applauding our spirits as they expand.  A brand new day in every way.  From depths to the heights, the true to the blue.

By late evening, a Pisces Moon grows with finesse, with sweet unheard melody that yearns to express- a wholeness of spirit in these upright of creatures, as artists and scientists, lovers and teachers!
