Weekly Astrology Metaphorcast 9/21-27, 2020

Sealed with a kiss, it is time to say goodbye to the summer.  Tuesday marks the first day of fall. The Sun goes into Libra the lover, with all the mystery of the other.  The equinox brings the phenomenon of equal day and night- will you try to stand an egg?  9:30 am is the official time for here in the  Eastern part of the US, if you care to give it a go.  Only during the equinox is the Earth’s axis not tilting toward or away from the Sun.  It is very bizarre to think of this only coming down to two moments of each passing year.  Egg or not it’s worth a pause of receptivity.  What will you notice during this rare World event?  Every other moment we stand upon a tilted Earth.  In her style of leaning, she blesses us with the Seasons!  In her spirit of duality she is leaning.  Instead of perfection there is a striving.

Fall has begun!  That “Second Spring” in the words of Albert Camus, “where every leaf is a flower.”  People are drawn from all over to get a literal peep.  Better get out those sweaters, and favor those flavors, of cinnamon, clove, apple and spice!  After all the primordial apple is wrapped up in the Fall- be it the fall of gravity on Newton’s dozing head, or the fall of innocence in a paradise garden.  Snow white took a fall when she bit her apple, into a deep slumber, only to be awakened by true loves kiss.  The crisp snap of an apple is the bold outline of Romantic Reality.  To acknowledge a Fall, and rise from it.  Falling down on the ground?  Well you must rise up again.  Falling asleep?  Well you must rise in the morning.  Falling in love?  Well, you must rise to cultivate that love and help it grow.  To Fall is to anticipate a rise.  Choose a course of action.  Make distinctions about what will and won’t work. This is the esoteric root of Libra’s freedom in decision-making.  Decision which means to “cut off” one route from another.  Perhaps that’s why King Arthur’s sword Excalibur was forged in Avalon, the island of apples.

Mercury the planet of perception in it’s final week of Libra- the apple of the eye used to mean the pupil; the zero-index blackness of in-drawing images.  A place where the world is translated upside-down. Cutting-edge and romantic.  Apples have always had a knack for being cutting edge, whether of the eye or the iphone.  As Cezanne declared, “give me an apple, and I will astonish Paris!”

Venus, the love Goddess, who makes pretty pentagrams in the sky, like the ones found in apples.  Wouldn’t it be she who took the first forbidden bite.  Now in Leo, the sign of the Sun, she imitates as a Morning Star. Rising like a true Romantic, who first had to acknowledge a fall.

Mars, the red hot planet in red hot aries and retrograde.  Fire.  The terror and the power.  Days of hazy skies.  The fire behind our appled eyes.  The principal of action, behind every moment of perception.

Jupiter, the planet of heights, stationed direc in Capricorn, the sign of the world.  Serious-Saturn and Metamorphosis-Pluto also in Capricorn, its easy to feel as though the world really is upside-down.  Good thing the Fall favors Romance, which lives on heights, and chooses hope in spite of despair.  As Abraham Lincoln said, “Teach hope to all, despair to none.”

Uranus, the most leaning of all planets, in bountiful Taurus.  Leaning with awareness, and learning from the seasons of your own life.

Neptune in Pisces, the low-dose poison in the center of the apple rendering its beauty all the more sublime.

The Moon

The Moon will be in Scorpio for half of Monday the last day of Summer, sprinkling some last bit of secrets into the wide open air.  Look for mist and nature winking back at you.

By 3:30 and through most of Wednesday she will be waxing crescent in Sagittarius- the high flying horse.  Fond of apples, the Horsey Moon welcomes in the Autumn Equinox on Tuesday and the air contains the potential for major lift off.  Lift off of spirits that is, if the right perspective is gleaned.  Fall, with all of it’s associations with melancholy challenge our powers of optimism.  As Emerson said “What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.”

By 7pm Wednesday and a new Season in full swing, the Moon waxes into it’s first quarter in Capricorn through Friday.  Learn to love those bold outlines of your life.  Those boundaries that allow you to create more freedom.  The crisp snap of apple otherness– that keeps you from sinking into too much subjective seawater!

The weekend hosts a waxing gibbous Aquarius Moon, always potent for breakthrough as it is the sign of the times.  Strong winds are likely- crescendoing the song of the trees.  Changing in color, escalating in song, what can trees tell us that we’ve known all along, about our true nature, as artist and seer, evolving this way to be ever more freer.

As always, happy astro pondering!

Metaphorcast for 9/14-20, 2020

It’s the final full week of Virgo Season and a New Moon is approaching.  The night sky at the beginning of the week will show the New Moon in the Old Moon’s arms- so to speak-as the dark New Moon sits in the welcoming light of the waning crescent.  This is perceived thanks to the phenomenon of Earthlight; the diffuse reflection of sunlight from the earth’s surface and clouds.  Also known as the Moon’s “ashen glow” Earthlight is quiet with potency, similar to a certain seasonal archetype we might know.  Yes Virgo, the quiet maiden, an earth sign, who’s light is the thoughtful and wholesome one of contemplation.  Absorbed in contemplation, she is undivided in wholeness and vibrant in the long-forgotten true spirit of leisure.

In his book, Leisure, the Basis of Culture, philosopher Josef Pieper points out that the ancient Greek word for leisure was schole, which produced the latin word scola, where we get our english word school.  This was also their word for learning institutions.  Schools were more settings of leisure, contemplation and celebration, then competitive deadlines and hurried eating.  Their word for work was “aschola” meaning “not at leisure”.  Nowadays leisure is looked at more as an unlikely indulgence if we are lucky enough to nab a few moments of free time- and even then- did we really immerse ourselves in that nice Virgo Earthlight of oneness-with-the-universe, by choice of delicious contemplation?  Did we manage to sit by the dock of the bay, watching the clouds roll in?

After all it is these moments, as Pieper points out, that great discoveries are made, be it Galileo watching the pendulum swing in a cathedral or Archimides screaming eureka in the bathtub.  Virgo connects to the widest reaches of the all, in her quite joys of leisure and contemplation.

Pieper explains that leisure is not the mere absence of activity.  He says, “it is rather like the stillness in the conversation of lovers, which is fed by their oneness.”

Virgo’s peace comes from this very alive place, of total absorption and immersion into a moment.  Delicious and golden.  Electronegative as the earth, or a waterfall.  Exquisite and simple.  As children’s author Dodie Smith said, “contemplation seems to be about the only luxury that costs nothing.”

Mercury, the seasonal planet of perception sails through the open airs of calming Libra. Soft eyes towards the wider skies, as the serene trickster makes a dynamic square to Jupiter, the limitless wide open blue of optimism.

Venus the romantic sweetheart in Leo, the sign the Sun, who’s rays reach out to all of life with bountiful joy and affirmation.  Josef Pieper said that “Leisure lives on affirmation”.  and further that “the most sublime form of affirmation of the world as a whole is the fountainhead of leisure.”

Mars retrograde deep in Aries, the sign of the dawn.  Here in the Eastern part of the US, the dawn makes for the best chances to catch a glimpse of the Moon’s Earthlight. The retrograde red hot will, in a rare moment of contemplation, where is the action best directed after all?  And what’s that other gorgeous sparkling light in the morning sky?  Why it’s Mars’ true love, Venus, winking back at him, reminding him of the cohesive powers of fire, that hold everything together from above.  An eagerness transforms into a fiery trust of intuition.

Jupiter direct approaches Saturn and Pluto in Capricorn– a pragmatic optimism marches forth towards a summit of transformative self-reliance.  As Pieper said of the contemplative person, “he needs himself alone; he lacks nothing.”

Uranus in Taurus– The restorative electronegativity of the earth

Neptune in Pisces- An ocean of emotion efficiently absorbed in moments of leisurely contemplation.

The Moon

The Moon begins the week waning crescent in Leo, the sign of the child.  A young and innocent sign in an old wise Moon.  The wealth of knowledge that children can teach us about the true spirit of leisure.  As Heraclitus said long long ago, “time is a game played beautifully by children.”

Tuesday and Wednesday host an ever slimming Virgo Moon.  The New Moon in the old Moon’s arms.  Can you see the ashen glow?  And feel a love-inspired need to know?

By 7am Thursday morning the Moon is New in Virgo.  Moon, Sun and Earth align with all of their gravitational forces joining together.  The tides rise, pulling the waters of our dreams and feelings upward, all in the contemplative key of Virgo.  With a supportive trine from Saturn, the planet of world.  Virgo’s earth lit mind taking the world in as a whole.  An orientation towards the whole of existence, from where you are now, in this very moment.  Nothing else needed.  Just an attentiveness, a loving attainment of awareness.

By 3pm she begins to wax the thinnest crescent in Libra, the sign of balance.  In a day whose primary engine is in making a living, a balance must be struck to, in Pieper’s words “reclaim our human dignity”. His manifesto for leisure was published a mere year after the term “workaholic” was first coined in Canada.  See what balance you can begin to cultivate, with eyes turned upward towards the wide open blue.

By Saturday afternoon she waxes crescent in Scorpio, the sign of power, and we have an Old Moon in the New Moon’s arms.  New with a profound sense of power.  Philosopher Colin Wilson says that all real power is spiritual power, or feeling-power, just as all experience is feeling-experience. Human dignity reclaimed and a crisp breeze through the trees, reoriented to wholeness, a mind finally sees, how its growing, in knowing and loving to know, in the Aquarian age, lets see where this goes!

As always, happy astro pondering!

Metaphorcast for 9/7-9/13, 2020

On the heels of a Labor Day weekend, Virgo Season is in full swing.  Labor Day appropriately falls on the Season of the Maiden, herself deeply associated with work. But her work continues just as well off the clock.  Her work is motivated by objective feedback, and most importantly a growth mindset, a mindset that embraces failure as useable information to find new ways of succeeding.  She worries less about appearing to be smart and puts more energy into learning.  As Michelangelo said at 87 years of age “I am still learning.”

Whether at home or in public, students are now preparing their brains to stretch and change as lessons are grappled with and new abilities are formed.  The humility of the Virgin is truly an evolutionary strategy- always with an eye turned towards improvement, she understands the true dynamic plastic nature of the brain, and it’s natural evolution that supports further freedoms.

Cerebrum and cerebellum have a root prefix of Ceres, the grain goddess, a character who in Greek myth went through profound spiritual an emotional change through the challenging turns of her life.  Ceres is latin for wax, a synonym for growth, as well as a precious substance that furnishes the leaves of an evergreen tree- keeping it forever young and vital.  Ceres motto may as well be resilience through change!  Which brings us to another word for education, a German word, popularized through the writings and lifestyle of Goethe.  Its a fantastic word that is fun to say.  The word is: Bildung!

Bildung means learning and education but also implies a maturity that comes from the cultivation of self.  The classroom is the arena of life, that teaches through experience.  It is existential and poetic!

Just as grapes that struggle produce the finest wines, brains that struggle and embrace learning produce the finest minds!  As Voltaire said, “No problem can withstand the assault of sustained thinking.”  Sticking with something, despite it’s challenges or difficulties actually changes the game! New pathways are constructed and new neurons are born.

New and true as the wide open blue.  Not a feeling, an objective truth!  The brain is like wax.

Growth is inevitable- but because the brain is like wax, there is an invitation to intentionally sculpt this growth- and begin your Bildung!  As Goethe said, “By seeking and blundering, we learn.”

Mercury, the sign of perception is moving into new air this week, in the harmonizing sign of Libra.  It’s a fresh breath of air, a call to a harmonizing of the mind,  alluring and intriguing.  As Marcel Proust wrote, “My destination is no longer a place, rather a new way of seeing.”

Venus moving through the early degrees of Leo, the love Goddess in the warm sign of the heart.  The togetherness of growth, be it an herb or a thought- that which grows together goes together, and that which fires together wires together!  The romantic reality of cultivated growth!  Goethe said, “Love does not dominate, it cultivates.”

Mars in the late degrees of Aries and taking a turn for the retrograde on Wednesday.  The warrior of will, headstrong with intent, taking another look at the map- is his forward true forward?

Jupiter the sign of education, moves direct  on Saturday, after being retrograde for 4 months!  In real-world Capricorn, the Archer will wait no longer, to turn setbacks into learning opportunities.  Discontentment has a purpose- and that is to feel that urge to grow!

Let the Bildung continue!  As it will soon come into conjunction with both cold-snap Saturn and underground Pluto- a growth mindset is key!  As an African proverb goes, “Smooth seas do not make skillful sailors.”

Uranus in Taurus- the widening awareness of your abilities, from the Maiden’s growth-oriented viewpoint.

Neptune in Pisces- the sea of subjectivity, often un-smooth, to make for skillful sailors, on their paths of Bildung.

The Moon

The Moon begins the week in Taurus, waning gibbous like a luxurious sigh- complimenting Labor Day with it’s heavy earth vibes.  Enjoy the education of doing nothing if you can!  As the Italians call it, Il Dolce Far Niente!  The sweetness of doing nothing.

Waning still in Taurus on Tuesday, by the early evening she shape shifts into Gemini, sparking curious subconscious questions that move about like fireflies.  The forest of subconscious mind is open and a glitter in the sign of the whimsical Twins through Wednesday and Thursday.  Some of these fireflies might stand out, and seek integration into the Bildung.  GK Chesterton said “The object of opening the mind, as of opening the mouth, is to close it again on something solid.”

Friday and Saturday host a thinner yet Cancer Moon, the sign of Mother, the original teacher.  Patience and sensitivity are her best tools, tuning-in to her children to best support their budding individuality.  A tuned-in Mood will accompany Jupiter’s forward movement on Saturday.  Tuned-in to a burst of optimism, that knows the brain by its true name- Ceres!  Wax!  Resilience through growth!

Sunday midday we have a waning Leo Moon, cozying up to Venus.  A real Sunday.  Bright with appetite.  An appetite to know and grow.  Unlike the Moon, the Sun never wanes. Unlike a mood, life always remains- devoted to growing, and learning and knowing.  From this perspective, a Bildung starts flowing!

As always, happy astro pondering!
