The close relationship of the heart and mind (Sun and Mercury)

I have a simian crease on my dominant hand.  For those who don’t know, that is one line across the palm of the hand instead of two.  It’s a blending of the head and the heart line.  Every now and then I zone out on it and certain questions start to percolate.

The simian line

Does my mind blend well with my heart?  Do my feelings always match my words?  It’s a lovely idea that the head and the heart should be so entwined.  I would guess that life would feel like a waltz that you knew all of the steps to.  In astrology the Sun rules the heart and Mercury rules the mind.  It’s interesting that Mercury is never 28 degrees farther away from the Sun.  Therefore many people have their Mercuries in the same sign as their Sun.  Is it easier for these people to find that happy balance between mind and heart?

images

Mercury, aka Hermes is the winged messenger in mythology. Does a healthy balance of mind and heart result in a genuine lightheartedness?

images-1

Babies don’t have their minds working enough yet to struggle with that imbalance so they are naturally light-hearted.

Unknown-2

The challenge is to get from being a light-hearted baby to here, after all that life throws at you.

My Sun is in Leo but my Mercury is in Virgo and I definitely feel the little tug of war between these energies within me.  I have an early memory that echoes through my soul where I was so eager to show off (Leo) that I knew the word that the teacher was writing on the board.  “I know what that says!  I know what that says!”  and the teacher said “Tess, don’t—” because she wanted the other kids to sound it out, but I didn’t heed her warning and blurted out “JILL!”.  The teacher let out a sigh of frustration and that’s when my Mercury in Virgo took over.  In my head I was mortified at my know-it-all behavior.  Where’s my humility??  My Virgo mind needed that I maintain humility but my Leo heart wanted to go for the gold!  This is a theme that has repeated itself many times over in my life.

These guys want peace not war!

Mercury also rules the lungs.  This ties mind into speech as well as connectivity with all living things.  The air we breath today is the same air that was breathed by Nostradamus and Shakespeare.  In the human body the lungs and the heart are VERY intimately connected just like the Sun and Mercury.  As I learned in my Medical Assistant training class,  the blood is blue when it enters the heart’s first chamber because it has no oxygen.  After it fills up the first two chambers of the heart it goes directly into the lungs where it becomes oxygenated and RED (!) then back into the heart’s last two chambers where it is sent through the aorta to deliver this oxygen to the rest of the body.  Pretty amazing…

The veins bring the blue blood back into the heart, where the lung dance happens and the arteries deliver the red blood back through the body.

A closer look at the blue and red heart. The pulmonary arteries and veins connect the heart and lungs. Major organ intimacy!

Is your natal Mercury in the same sign as your natal Sun or in a different one?  If understanding these relationships better can help facilitate a lighter heart, I think that is reflection well spent. YakYucks

Happy Birthday Johnny Cash!

To say he is an enigma is quite the understatement when it comes to Johnny Cash.  “The Man in Black” without a doubt lives up to his mysterious nickname.  His words come out straight, with no extraneous descriptive poetics, yet they hit us deep within our soul by way of emotional accuracy.  This man knows pain and suffering, and he strides through that dark territory like the outlaw that he is.

images-1

On to his chart!

Data Deluxe

The fist theme that jumps off the page here (always a good place to start) is the EXTREME Neptune/ Pisces energy.  He has his Sun (life energy) conjunct his Mercury (speech and mind) and Mars not far behind (what makes him tick) ALL in sensitive Pisces and all in Pisces’ natural house, the 12th.  The 12th house brings Pisces types of issues into your world- issues like times when you feel vulnerable, overwhelmed, or weak.

cash

The 12th house can be your own personal prison. A place where you are stuck until you learn that you hold the key to your freedom. Here stands Johnny outside of San Quentin prison, one of the two prisons he famously performed in.

On the higher end this could be times/places that bring feelings of rapture or interconnectedness with all of life.  But suffering is no stranger to the 12th house, and Pisces energy feels everything more sensitively.  Let’s add the very important detail that Neptune itself is EXACTLY opposite his Sun/Mercury- adding one more POWERFUL thrust of vulnerability to this equation.  It’s really unbelievable this set up.  This man is either walking with God or walking with his demons.

cash1968

Here at Folsom Prison the climate is one more of rapture than isolation. He’s the man for the job.

johnny_and_billy_1383334306_600x275

Pisces seeks the rapture. Cash sought this through drug and alcohol addiction as well as religious experiences. Here he is with his good friend the Reverend Billy Graham. He valued this friendship so much that his house in Jamaica featured a “Billy Graham room” with a bed only for Billy.

Instead of cowering in a corner in the face of pain and suffering, Cash puts on a headlamp and marches straight in to the dark trenches of sorrow in search of something true.  This is the spirit of an 8th house Scorpio Moon.  Scorpio is emotional energy that goes deep and craves REALNESS.  The 8th house is the place in life where those things happen, like intimate relationships or offering values (like the messages in his songs) that can be truly SHARED by others.

Unknown-1

Cash faces emotional trouble dead on and transforms (Scorpio) pain into wisdom.

Another Uranus/Venus Aries example is his spontaneous (Uranus) proposal (Venus) to June Carter in 1968. She tried to deflect his question, as he was a bit high at the time, but he made sure he got an answer (Aries). His unrequited love for June helped him “walk the line”, instead of floating off into obscurity. (Aries verse Pisces).

But there’s more to Cash’s approach.  He’s an outlaw.  Which brings us to his guns-blazing Venus Uranus conjunction.  Venus (personal charm) is fused with Uranus (the rule breaker/ outlaw!) and they are in fiery courageous Aries in the first house (personal style/identity).  This piece of dynamite is squared by Pluto, which blows it up even bigger with empowerment from the 5th house (the house of self expression).

images

Cash the outlaw. This picture is worth a thousand words to describe Uranus/Venus in Aries square Pluto.

His Jupiter is in Leo, bringing a restoration of faith through play and spontaneous fun (Leo).  Humor wedges it’s way into the tumultuous terrain of emotional bullets with songs like “A Boy Named Sue”.

So Happy Birthday to The Man in Black!  Hello, he’s Johnny Cash!  Thank you a million times over you beautiful man!

Cash in his element (Water) outside his home in Hendersonville, Tennessee.

A look at some elements that appeared at the Oscars

Fire excites.  Water makes you feel.  Here are two examples of those energies in action taken from the Oscars this past Sunday.

Patricia Arquette stoked the flames in the audiences hearts when she used her acceptance speech to command attention to the need for equal wages and equal rights for women. Meryl Streep was so excited that she stood up and pointed “Yes!”.  Patricia is a double fire sign, with her Sun in Aries and her Moon in Leo.  Not to mention that at the time of her speech transiting Venus and Mars were in Aries (fiery passion) and stimulating her natal Aries Mercury in the 9th house (her fiery mind naturally tuned into 9th house matters, like politics).

Patricia started the political fieriness off early in the night, bringing excitement to the audience

The excitement brought Meryl to her feet shouting “Yes!”

Common and John Legend’s performance of “Glory” stirred up a lot of emotion in the audience.  Tears continued to flow as they took turns with the acceptance speech after winning the award moments later.  Common is a double Water, with both his Sun and Moon in compassionate all-embracing Pisces.  The last line of the speech, in reference to the “spirit of the bridge” at Selma couldn’t sum up the Pisces energy any better: “This bridge was built on hope, welded with compassion and elevated by love for all human beings”.

John-Legend-Common-Oscar-Acceptance-Speech

Common and Legend made a point to have their acceptance speech tie directly into the important themes equal rights for all human beings prolonging the high emotions in the audience.

images

David Oyelowo has Venus in Pisces as did Martin Luther King. Relating to others (Venus) in an all-accepting compassionate way (Pisces). MLK also had a Pisces Moon which puts those themes even more centered into his soul.

All in all a very enjoyable Oscars!

Astro Oscar preamble! Best Actor

The Oscars are almost here!  Let’s have a quick look at some astro observations having to do with the best actor nominees..

images-2

Eddie Redmayne and Bradley Cooper both have the same big transit happening for them this year.  Pluto is conjunct their natal Suns, as they are born one day apart from each other.  Their natal Suns being in achievement-oriented Capricorn are being blown up BIG (Pluto) and perhaps transformed.  Redmayne clearly already transformed himself as an actor in the public eye showing how he can seemingly shape-shift directly into Stephen Hawking with all that realism.  I have yet to see “American Sniper” but it’s safe to say that both of these chaps could stand to welcome more BIGNESS into their years by picking up an Oscar.

images

Redmayne definitely transformed (Pluto) himself in this role

AMERICAN SNIPER

Cooper has been very open about the deep transformative effect (Pluto transit) taking on this role has had on him by learning about the struggles that military families take on.

I would love to see Benedict Cumberbatch win if not for his speech alone.  On Oscar night Mars and Venus will be together in Aries (passionate fire-cracking energy) and making a perfect trine (supportive influence) on his natal Leo Mercury (dramatic confident style of speech).

images-3

Speech! Speech! Speech!

If Carell wins, the transiting Sun will be right on his natal Moon in Pisces, highlighting his other-worldly way.  We can perhaps expect to see something strange and mysterious in his speech, or maybe a speech of real compassion (all Pisces things).

CARELLpic

Visible mystery or compassion likely with his speech

I couldn’t find reliable birth data for Keaton, but good luck to him.

michael-keaton-birdman

“Birdman” was awesome IMO..

May the best man win!

Happy Birthday Leslie Nielsen!

What is it about Leslie Nielsen that can render a person so powerless against any efforts to not laugh?  How does he destroy us so, with gags that often in and of themselves, aren’t that funny.  What does he do?  What is happening to us in the process?  Why are we rolling around on the floor gasping for breath with our sister?  Okay- maybe that last part is more just me…

Where did I first see Leslie Nielsen?  It was “Airplane!” – where he played Dr. Shirley Rumack — “Surely you can’t be serious!”  “I am serious, and don’t call me Shirley!”.  This is where many of us first saw Nielsen because this was his pivotal role that launched his career in comedy.

Unknown

Nielsen in “Airplane!”, the turning point in his career

His deadpan delivery is what sent him soaring into popularity as a comedic actor.  And he had over 30 years of experience as a serious actor beforehand, starring in such films as “The Forbidden Planet” and “The Poseidon Adventure” along with lots and lots of television performances.

But it’s his straight face, his deadpan look in the midst of total absurdity that gets us.  With “Airplane!” his niche was made and many hilarious spoofs followed, like “Police Squad” and “The Naked Gun” series.

tve12853-128-19631203-0

Recognize this poker face? Nielsen uses it in a non-comedic way with his work in the 60s television series “The Fugitive”

1-leslie-nielsen-naked-gun-33

Same poker-face but now it’s HILARIOUS….

So let’s look at his chart.

Data Deluxe

Can we see anything at play here?  We are looking for an energy that can best express DEADPAN humor.  In other words, EMOTIONLESS in it’s delivery.  What sign is the most detached from emotion?  That would be AQUARIUS.  Aquarius needs to be detached from the murky weight of emotion.  It doesn’t have time to dwell in peoples moods and feelings because it seeks a larger framework in which to be effective. It can’t afford to have intensely hurt feelings when he doesn’t fit into a certain crowd because it is NOT SUPPOSED TO FIT IN.  It wants to embrace it’s uniqueness and the freedom that brings so it can find it’s rightful, true place in society.  This is AIR, light, detached, and maybe a little strange…

wrongfullyAccused

A little strange? He is a master of “a little strange”..

Nielsen has just about everything in Aquarius and mostly all in the first house of self-projection.  These roles come naturally to him because he literally has great ease in turning off the emotional switch, much to our delight.   With out the emotion some lines are much funnier, like,  “Well, we shot a lot of people together.  It’s been great.  But today I retire, so if I do any shooting now, it will have to be within the confines of my own home.  Hopefully an intruder and not an in-law, like at my bachelor party”

LESLIE-NIELSEN-1

It’s funny to note that Nielsen also has Mars in Capricorn on his Ascendant, fusing his identity (ASC) with authoritative (Capricorn) command (Mars). He’s always playing these cops and pilots who are supposed to be in control of everything. The problem is he’s OUT TO LUNCH. (Aquarius, sometimes).. ; )

I love Leslie.  It was sad to say goodbye to him a couple years ago.  But then it was pretty funny to see what he did with his tombstone…

You’re the best, Leslie…

My personal favorite Leslie Nielsen scene ever. If you feel like laughing watch the video below. Buzzn Frog… enjoy!

Happy Birthday James Dean!

James Dean, the epitome of cool.  Let’s have a look at some key components that carve out this coolness, shall we?
Data Deluxe #1.  You never know what he’s going to do. Dean has Uranus tightly conjunct his Ascendant, fusing his identity (Ascendant) with a rebellious and contrarian spirit (Uranus).  He’s just DIFFERENT (Uranus again) than the other actors of his time- or anytime!  Watching him brings about an awareness of a wild unpredictability (Uranus).  I remember seeing a scene from “East of Eden” (my favorite of his 3 movies) where James Dean and the other actor are in a locker room discussing the lucrative prospective of growing beans.  The one actor is very focused on what he is saying, meanwhile Dean is kind of hopping all around the locker room, climbing up on benches and down again and at times zeroing in close on the other actor’s personal space.  At one of these invasively close moments the other actor exclaims (in a very natural reactive way) “don’t get so close I’ll get all hot again!”.  I would put good money down saying that that line is NOT in the script.  I could be wrong but I doubt it. The point being that Dean doesn’t care.  He doesn’t care if he is making the other actor uncomfortable, or jeopardizing the script, or coming across a little looney.  He is being natural to his own whims, like a child, without being irritating (maybe a little bit to that actor).

Dean does things his own way

#2.  He knows his influences. Before Dean was famous he was writing letters upon letters to Marlon Brando.  He was enchanted by Brando in every way.  Brando rode a motorcycle so Dean rode a motorcycle.  Brando dressed in jeans and white T-shirts so Dean dressed in jeans and white T-shirts.  Brando played the bongos so Dean played the bongos.  The emulating got to be so much that Brando wrote HIM a letter saying “You have to be YOU, not ME”. But Dean knew that what Brando was doing was starting a new wave in human culture (Brando is a double Aries, a pioneer).  James Dean has an Aquarius Sun in the eleventh, which is the house naturally associated with Aquarius.  Aquarius seeks to identify itself by challenging the status quo, and seeking other like-minded people.  The eleventh is the field of life where those like-minded relationships take place.  It’s interesting to wonder if there would have been a James Dean had there been no Brando.

Marlon-Brando-James-Dean-Leather-Biker-Of-The-Realm

Hailing in the new wave of cool, Brando and Dean.

#3.  He shows his vulnerable side. As stated in a previous post “The Crying Game: Water planets and the comfortability in expressing emotion” James Dean has his Moon in deep and mysterious feeling-oriented Scorpio.  When he cries, the audience FEELS it.  It’s REAL. The beginning of “Rebel Without A Cause” features Dean falling down drunk on the street next to a wind-up toy monkey.  As the credits roll, he plays around with the monkey and it quickly becomes a deep emotional connection between the two of them.  The monkey amuses him with it’s wind-up talents and then Dean tucks him in with a ratty newspaper “blanket” and a party ribbon trash thing for a pillow.  He makes sure the monkey is comfortable and then he snuggles up as close to it as he can get.  The sweetness comes across SO genuine!  It’s the first 5 seconds of the movie and he’s already won our hearts!!  And yes, he improvised the whole bit, as the cast and crew stared on with admiration.

rebelwithoutacause_001

Opening moments of “Rebel Without a Cause”

#4.  He shows a strong sense of personal authority. Astrologer Caroline Casey, author of “Making the Gods Work for You” (get it get!!) talks about how the word “cool” is derived from the Yoruba word which originally meant “responsible”.  “Cool-headed” meant that that person took care of what he should.  Like Babe Ruth with his leaf of cabbage under his ball cap.  Keeping cool-headed so he can hit the home runs.  This is Saturn talk. Saturn is authority, which starts with inner authority.  Self composure, steadiness, a sureness in what you say and do.  James Dean has a very powerful Saturn in the 10th house of career (the house naturally associated with Saturn).  It is in Capricorn (the SIGN naturally associated with Saturn) and it is opposed (bringing in a full awareness of) the powers of Pluto.  Anything Pluto touches in empowered, or it is wounded UNTIL it is empowered.

jamesdean225.jpg.html

Sureness. Self-composer. In tune with his own rhythm.

Happy Birthday, James Dean.  A true rebel with a deep and mysterious heart, forever cool.
